Dan only wants players to be positive-outcome-producing robots when their humanity tediously dominates a news cycle or when they are Cubs/Blackhawks. If they're seven-foot, bus-riding never-weres who need to be protected from nonexistent allegations of "thuggery," then they're really interesting people.

 Yeah, kind of odd, isn't it?

Seriously though, I'm not sure he's conscious of it, but I would guess that his viewpoint is informed by the very different natures of the sports. Basketball features men wearing very little in the way of clothing competing in a relatively small space with the audience nearly on top of them. Hockey and football players actually look like robots on their respective fields of play. Of course, television affords us those candid shots of helmetless football players with steaming heads on the sidelines, but I think hockey has declined in popularity in the U.S. since players began wearing helmets.

There might have been some very interesting people in the CBA after all. I'm sure there was like a 7'2" guy from Mississippi who wanted to be a choreographer but was forced into a life of basketball despite not even liking it and hence sucking at it such that he was stuck playing for the Rockford Lightning; so much for winning the genetic lottery. I can see stories like that in basketball, maybe even on the peripheries of the NBA. The NHL is not a lush vineyard of human interest, though. Hockey players are pretty much just guys who grow up liking hockey, decide they want to play hockey, and then play a lot of hockey while attentively following hockey. Big fuckin' deal. It's much more interesting, when, as Dan gushed over various Bears players, guys who play football don't even follow football or respect the history of football. Worse, they're pretty much all from the myriad Naperville analogues of the Great Lakes/Northeast and just go on to drink too much and fuck underage girls, so it's not like they've earned this debauchery by overcoming any sort of societal adversity. It's their white privilege that allows them to engage in the silliness of strictly enforced rules about where you can walk on the carpet; when life used to be hard, that's when the locker room is the office, where these people go to work like men. I guess the same kinda goes for baseball players being comfortably obnoxious, except I'm pretty sure they're just grown on farms in central Florida or something.

I've sometimes wondered if the whole Kaner obsession is part of some full-scale effort to bust the widespread myth of hockey players being "the most down-to-earth athletes" as mere racial coding for "white guys" and fight back with real-life experience of how oh, no no, it is in fact the black people who are the most down-to-earth and the white guys are the belligerent douchebags, you bigoted cargo-shorted monsters, but it's probably just that Patrick Kane is kind of annoying. And dwelling on how interesting a fucking professional athlete is is okay when Dan says it is simply because this time Dan says it is.

I think it's both.

If players really are going to be replaced by robots, might I suggest that some of the better ones be painted black so B&b can continue to have a show.

He couldn't handle dealing with the "common" fan; so he took and had "HIS" rules (no nicknames when someone called in, couldn't be bothered to listen to the topic being discussed, and is a complete jock suck who has clung to living next to Halas Hall as grounds to be considered a "good" sports reporter for 20+ years.)

I'm certainly not a fan of Telander but that doesn't stop me from appreciating his skill as a writer, something that is sorely lacking from Chicago's sports pages these days. His Baby Boomer penchant for seeing sports as a metaphor for or reflection of society at large aside, there's no doubt the man can write. That he's been allowed to indulge himself by writing about such things as his daughter's Dartmouth swimming team is something that should be laid at the feet of his editors.

As far as not dealing with the "common fan" goes, that's a major component of B&b, which is clearly the most beloved show in this forum and perhaps in all of Chicago sports radio. In fact, if you're going to do "Serious Radio" and talk constantly about child rape and CTE, I think it would be good practice not to take a call from "Virgil Livers' Left Nut".

Telander, much like Mike Ditka, USED to be good. Now he makes a living on his previous reputation. It's been years (even before his run at WSCR) that I felt Telander wrote anything I would say was skilled. That's part of the reason his daughter's swim team columns get past the editors, because, who would dare edit someone as talented and as well respected as Rick Telander?

Hood might of burned his bridge (following North over to Webio certainly didn't help his career) but Telander is a pompous ass who should of retired years ago, so he could go spend time with his family and watch his daughter swim at Dartmouth.

I don't see how Hood giving Telander enough rope to hang himself and treating like him like the douche he is on the radio can still be holding him back, Each station has probably had 2 changes each at since then...has to be much more to it.....And I have never seen anything racist from Scorehead.

Telander was management's big hire in a reshifting of priorities. Management doesn't forget when you fuck up their plan and they let other management know about it.

Would Hood be taking a pay cut to return to the Score as B and B producer? I believe bigfan detailed that Goff and drinky were pulling down pretty decent money when all of their sidework associated with the show is taken into account. I think it would be a great shot in the arm for both the B and B show and Hood if something like this would happen.

Hood is well liked by all the major talent at the station so he could be the go to man for fill in work. I'm sure he would kill to be a goff styled expert on one of the teams.

I'm sure he'd look at that as a huge step backwards in his career at this point.

Panther has a thing about people "knowing their place" in terms of voicing discontentment. This is one of the few things that I disagree with Panther on. In his world, if you have a grievance or concern to raise with your boss or superior, you shouldn't because "Damn it! He's your boss and you ought to be glad to have a job!"

Just another boss that is unable to deal with others unless it's done from a position of strength or in this case, through a mediator or judge. "Knowing your place" is code for "I don't possess the personal skill set to deal directly with others collegially ," so just do what I tell you.

Are there people who go into Hooter's who actually think anything but about 5% of the women are above busted level? The good part for the women is that they are deluded for a couple of years into thinking they are borderline models.

True. But not all of us want 3 chins. Good god, Hood is HUGE. Is that a recent photo? He looks like a heart attack waiting to happen.

Let's not go too nuts over the hooters girls posing with him. They'll pose with any customer. It's not like he has a chance of banging them. 300+ pounders don't get hot women.

I think you're exaggerating a bit

Its like 10% really hot. 40% decently hot% 50% busted

1. Hood doesn't have money.

2. The 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s of the gold digger world don't bang 300 pounders. Cuz if they're a 7,8,9 or 10, they sure as hell can find a sucker that's rich and slim in the sex for money game.
