If I recall, Mulligan was comparing Bernstein to another Duke grad who Mully knows who is an ER doctor. Mulligan said (partly or wholly jokingly) that Berns had wasted his life compared to this other guy. This followed a discussion about concussions and how Hunter Hillenmeyer had aced his Wunderlich test. Hanley went on to say that he and Bernstein happened to take the Wunderlich test together (on a lark) and the results suggested that Hanley's most suitable profession would be journalist. That's when Mully opined that Berstein's results would probably have recommended him doing something more productive than being a radio host.

In other words, Mully actually gave Bernsie a backhanded compliment.

Exactly...I think he said his (Berstein's) score indicated he had the brains to do anything, but yet here he is.

Would Bernstein be qualified to do anything else? He likes listening to himself talk and yelling at people. Could he get paid to be a woman?

Why does anyone call the show anymore? The sole reason for taking calls is to crap on callers.

This is especially bad. I see the once in a while but to let these callers through only to kill them and tell them don't listen. I am interested to see these advanced metrics they have.

I wonder if Bernstein comes in every day and checks his WARH.

My kid isn't good enough for me to yell at anybody else but him. We have had a few incidents this year already.

I can't believe Bernstein lets his kid play hockey.

Terry just clearly demonstrated more basketball knowledge than Dan on that Rondo call. Of course he's on pace for the HoF.

Edit:   @ Dan for not knowing there's a basketball-reference site too

Bernstein has not wasted his life. He makes 500k a year. Works 5 hours a day. Has no pressure (Show is on cruise control. Same routine every day). You could make 500k+ as a Doctor or lawyer. Sure. But the stress and pressure in your life is tremendous. Same with many other careers. Bernstein has no job stress. No pressure. He has his loyal listeners. He'll always have them. Show makes enough money for Zim's and Mitch's liking. Bernstein makes his 500k a year by saying "Fuck You" to everybody. He answers to nobody (Mitch Rosen is scared to death of him). By the way, does Mully really believe that all Duke grads are succesful millionaires with prestigious professions? Just not true. Especially in this economy. Hundreds of thousands of kids graduate from elite colleges every year. To think that all of them go on to fame, prestige and fortune is just stupid.

Bernstein is also revered and feared by everybody at the Score. He loves that. Such an ego boost. So he has a perfect life.

You're not going to believe who Jason Richardson's most statistically similar players are.

EDIT: apparently Joe Johnson and David Wesley, actually I completely believe that!

Anyone who thinks Dan isn't winning needs to listen to that last call about why the Bears don't try running a pro set with Forte and Bush. If he's not interested in what you have to say or doesn't feel like exerting to effort to make fun of you he can just ignore your question and move onto the next call. He doesn't even have to pretend to be interested in what you have to saylike other hosts have to.

Dan ranted after a caller opened with, "I'm a part-time listener" -- and the gloves came off. Berns basically spent the next five minutes raising his voice and informiong the caller that 1. He doesn't care what the caller has to say, and 2. The show doesn't need to be re-tooled, they know what they are doing and the show is highly successful.
Sounds like Dan believes he has nothing to worry about -- and I agree.

The show is still terrible, though.

He doesn't have anything to worry about because the competition refuses to try.

Could the afternoon show on the Score have better rating? Sure.

Like I've always said, Bernstein is safe as long as Mitch and Zim run the Score. If they ever higher a new PD or GM, Bernstein could be in trouble.

I once thought Bernstein could always find another job in Chicago radio. Now I'm not so sure. I think a lot of people in the industry hate him. I also once thought he could go national. I no longer think that.

I dont understand the point you're making here, and especially the bolded part. What is Dan winning? And every host has the ability to act like Dan does towards callers, but most don't have the arrogance. Mac and Meat will completely dismiss idiot callers. They did twice today.

What I don't understand most is the role or lack thereof of the bosses. In any business you have customers. Those customers run the gamut from potential ones to the hardcore disciples of your product. In the case of this radio show sure they can be doing a good rating with regard to the competition and they can also be making a lot of money for the company. The aim of a radio station should be to gain more listeners and make even more money.

Telling people they are idiots (even if they are) and not to listen to your show does not grow the bottom line. Bernsie is the talented salesman of widgets hanging in the 85th percentile cruising and not maximizing his or the company's potential.

Sorry, I was tying that out on a cell phone as I was waiting for someone so I couldn't get in all the context that I wanted to.

The "winning" thing is his ability to make six figures with relative ease at a low stress (I can't imagine that he actually stresses about Bears callers once he leaves the studio) job. Take the caller I mentioned in my previous post, not a terrible question considering the types of calls the show has been fielding for the past two days, but Dan wouldn't even deign to respond to it, he questioned if anyone in the NFL ran it, hung up on the guy and moved to the next call. This is after spending an entire Monday afternoon actively engaging with literal retards. When presented with something that falls outside of his circle of interest he essentially shuts down. He's winning in the sense he gets to dictate exactly how he wants to show to sound. I'll grant you that Mac & Meat will dismiss a caller here or there but it's Dan's bread and butter.

I guess this is just a long way of saying Dan gets paid an embarrassing amount of money and doesn't have to suffer fools like the dopes at ESPN have to.

He's winning cuz he can do whatever the fuck he wants and gets paid 500k to do it. Like I said, he's feared by everybody at the station including his bosses.

Bernstein's response to his critics is the same as Drew Peterson's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaT_2scindA

I remember on one of the Dan and Leery Radio Business Mutual Masturbation Sessions, I want to say back around August, they laughed off the notion that listeners have any equity in the broadcast, mocking people who say "I pay your salary!" with "no, our sponsors pay our salaries." He's right, of course, but if no one's listening, what are you billing?

Fortunately, the fact that the Score exists in a regional cluster inoculates them from really having to be all that accountable. You sell the entire CBS family: between 780, B96, the Score, and US99, you've got a pretty comprehensive demographic range. And national buys? as if they give a fuck if some sports-talk doofus in Chicago is mean to his callers or goes up his ass about Flip Saunders too much. I don't think any rep really has the unenviable position of having to sell JUST Boers and Bernstein.

So the show does well enough and probably doesn't lose the station any money, so no need to rock the boat.

Quote:

This kinda gets back to my post from months ago about how Dan has built up the capital to just be whatever he wants to be until he doesn't and never was. They're football tacticians until sports are stupid. They're pedophilia carelords until rape jokes are funny. The entire program is a Who You Crappin' that eats its own crap and then craps it back out and then eats it again.

I see your point CH. I guess there isn't a big enough hole in afternoon ratings to make sponsors notice.
