North turned down 800k when he walked from the Score and he never beat "Mike and Mike". Bernstein is a 15 year talk show vet doing afternoon drive. Gotta be worth at least 400k since he's splitting the show's worth with Boers. I think Bernstein gets more than Boers since Terry is basically his puppet. Bernstein drives the show and its content. So I'm guessing it's 500k for Bernstein to Terry's 350k or something close to that.

True. He did it today. Concussions aren't sad. They're just football. But in five minutes he'll be hand-wringing. He just can't help himself from big-timing a caller. They guy hung up in disgust.

danny should realize that shock jocks have a shelf life. You can be Garry Meier or Wally Phillips and last forever or you can be Steve Dahl or Mike North and end up podcasting from your basement. Which path do you think danny is on?

Bernstein will be on the air as long as he wants. He will do whatever his bosses tell him to. He won't throw tantrums against management.

Dan's too smart to end up like Dahl or North. Again, he chooses his battles so that he'll never lose.

Also, Meier had a pretty long lacuna in his radio career, didn't he? Weren't there three or four years between leaving 890 and doing that show on CKG? And wasn't that era of CKG kind of a tree-falling-in-a-forest situation?

I agree that he isn't a loose cannon like North and Dahl, but I think his shtick will get old eventually (it has for some already) and I'm not sure whether he can reinvent himself. I wouldn't rule it out. He's capable of being a good reporter. I just don't think he'd be very happy going straight after all those years being a jerkoff on the radio.

This is why I love CSFMB. I guarantee there isn't another sports message board in America where guys use "lacuna".

I just can't fathom those numbers. I thought radio was cutting back on big personality type guys salaries. I'd be shocked if any of them make more than 330 a year, including Danny Mac.

I thought when Mac came back he did a 350K thing with incentives the "recession" contract. I don't doubt B&B made that cash before but they must have done new deals since things changed and Mac came back. The no more big radio salaries was why Dahl got paid a year to stay home as they tried to break his huge contract. Same with Mancow and the others. The big radio star salaries are gone.

This has been heading this way a long time and the start of this trend was probably what North never understood when he wouldn't take a cut that was offered.

Well, if Mac got 350k then Bernstein is at least 500k cuz afternoon billing for sponsors is higher than midday. They have drive time.

Mitch and Zim are pussies. Like I've said, if they hire some hot shot GM with balls, he'd fire Bernstein. Why? Cuz the replacement will do the same numbers at the very least. Why? Cuz if Carm, Jurko and Harry are making money for ESPN, a less combative show would make that same money on the Score. It's that simple. And a new GM and/or PD would want to put his mark on the station. If it's an alpha dog GM, he'd want to fire Bernstein. The Score wouldn't lose many listeners. The people that love B&B, hate CJH. And they would gain some CJH listeners that hate B&B. It could be an overall net gain if the new Score show isn't as horrible as CJH.

Beardown,
I'll say it again. I miss North and I miss Murph, too. I usually loved his Cub Rants. Now there is not a major host who is a Cubs fan. I like Mac & his jovial partner. B&B,I just catch a few minutes here and there. It's about all I can stomach anymore.

EDIT: The morning show is OK . It's like eating vanilla ice cream.

Who knew activism sports radio could be so lucrative?

And Bernstein had concussions...he thinks. So lay off.

Could the afternoon show on the Score have better rating? Sure.

Like I've always said, Bernstein is safe as long as Mitch and Zim run the Score. If they ever higher a new PD or GM, Bernstein could be in trouble.

I once thought Bernstein could always find another job in Chicago radio. Now I'm not so sure. I think a lot of people in the industry hate him. I also once thought he could go national. I no longer think that.

Exactly. Like I posted a few days ago, Berns was THE rising star in Chicago sports broadcasting, he was also on the national radar as well...but he shit the bed & killed any chance that he had to be a major star. He is disliked at the Score, in Chicago, & has lost the national luster that he once enjoyed, & is no longer a future national prospect. Berns will end up like North, but it will happen to Berns about 20 years sooner.

It can and will if and when they get new management at the Score. Bernstein has gotten out of control. Bernstein has gone "Full Bernstein" over the last year. I never thought he'd do that. It's gotten out of control. Just like actors should never go "Full Retard" in movies, sports radio hosts should never go "Full Bernstein".

North was the face of Chicago radio, and was 10x the star Bernstein is. Ultimately, whether it was from boredom, or changing desires, or buying into his own hype he fell on his face.

I didn't even know who Bernstein was in 2004 but I became a fan. He's clearly different, oscillating between wanting to be a real reporter that makes a difference(concussions, Penn State) and a guy who wants to tell people how dumb they are because they like watching the Bulls and think that the Bears offense relies too much on Brandon Marshall.

It seems as if Bernstein is living in a sports media purgatory, where he's making a good living, seems generally happy, and is good at what he does, but he doesn't really have anything else left to do. Do you really see Bernstein doing the same show 10 years from now? That thought probably scares the daylights out of him. His choice is either to become more "national-ready" or just keep on pushing through. So far, he's not national-ready even if he has the talent. Now, maybe he could switch it off when yahoo sports radio comes calling for an afternoon show, but I'm not so sure. Old habits die hard.

That's my view of it too. I have no doubt that bernstein could have been and could be a good serious newsman or a corporate type sportscaster. But he's chosen his path. And I think he would be miserable with the rigidity and changing would be quite difficult for him. His reflex is to argue and insult. It may have started as shtick, but I think it's become habit. The way he acts on Twitter is good evidence of that. And I really can't see him doing this show in another ten years. Even his heretofore ALS has expressed disappointment in him. His type of shock jockery (and make no mistake, B&b is a version of that) definitely has a shelf life.

Did you get a raise?

I think I have posted this in the past, sure the neurologist cousin and lawyer brother get all the praise from grandma at family parties but each of them would trade their existence for Dan's in a heartbeat. No competitve graduate school to endure. No slavish hours as a junior in your field. No night and weekend work. No preparation. 4 hours per day at $250-500K per year.

So he's not curing cancer or defending the downtrodden. Big deal. The truth most professionals won't tell you is that after performing a task enough times that you develop an expertise, that task starts to become as rote as welding a bolt on a line at the auto plant. Every job eventually becomes a pattern.

He still has a meaningful job. Even if it had no meaning, it puts food on the table and a roof over the head of a family. That is meaning.

Bingo. If anyone should be bitter it should be Drinky, 10 years in and still a producer? Do you think he thinks he'll be doing the show for another ten years, that thought alone would terrify the shit out of me.

I like to think that Dan does something like this once the "On-Air" light goes off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1seThIG34R8
