another bernsism...caller had a throwaway line that he obviously wasn't ready to back up about the golden age of masculinity...and what do b&b harp on?

that throwaway line.

the guy was certainly out of his element and had no idea how to speak english after that. but he did make a few points that were semi-salient. any other show would've left it alone and said "thank you for the call".

and enough with harping on people who say "we". it's very simple, dan. it's a showing of possessiveness because, you know, "fan" is short for "fanatic". it's not meant to be logical or correct. it's just a sign of passion.

I hope for a day where every caller excessively uses "we" and "our" when speaking of a team.

Maybe Matt would let it happen for an April Fool's prank.

Dan's head might literally explode.

Dan was being a shithead there but he made a point later that is true of all the meatballs that call the show. He said that many fans want the players to reflect on the field what the fan feels internally. That's not exactly groundbreaking stuff but a welcome departure from the bullheaded dismissiveness that Dan usually trades in.

Knowing this though only raises further questions. If Dan knows that fans attach themselves to a sports team on such an emotional level why doesn't he just say it to the caller directly? Dan let that masculinity caller dangle on the line a good five minutes even though he knew full well that the caller was just one idiot in a long, long line of idiots that turn to sports in order to shed some light on their otherwise insignificant lives. That's some strange magic Dan is able to work, he's got me feeling sympathetic for some meatball I don't even know.

Don't ZZ and Larry listen to Dan's show, they cover these press conferences right? I would think that they would be pissed that Dan's sorta/maybe calling their journalistic integrity into question.

Dan is full of contradiction. I am really waiting for someone to ask him point blank about youth hockey and concussions. His kid might get good and likely will fall in love with this game. At what point, age or level is he gonna sit his kid down and tell him he can no longer play the game as it is too risky? I think they start checking before junior high for sure.

Mac asked him that when it was first brought up.

Bernsy hemmed and hawed before saying he'll deal with that if he needs to later on.

well, i think that comes from a portion of fans that are older, and come from a generation where i think the players did reflect that. the game has morphed more into a sterile business now. free agency has pretty much killed the romanticism of being in the same boat emotionally. and now, since they make so much, playing for money is a lot more believable as an excuse for players not to "reflect what the fans feel". i mean, they just probably don't. i can't stand it when players say they "bleed" a certain color code respectful to the team they're playing for. oh sure you do, until someone offers you more money.

and to your second part about letting the caller dangle--we're definitely on the same page. i did feel bad for the guy. bernstein loves to play intellectual bully but if someone could actually challenge him, he would back down like a lost little puppy. get over yourself, dan.

I can't guarantee but I'd bet there are a whole slew of clips of retired players using "we" to talk about their teams during analysis. Think Dan would call them out?

That's a bad example.

- Are those retired players current employees of their former team (as in the case of Tom Thayer)?

- Are those retired players giving anecdotes about their playing days (i.e. "Back when we played _____ in the Super Bowl")?

There are a lot of circumstances where an analyst or retired player using "we" is appropriate. On the other hand, an everyday caller to the show is almost never a former player or a current employee of a team.

Either way, Bernstein shouldn't make such a big deal out of something so harmless.

I think Zack said all that needs to be said about it. Anyone who corrects someone for using the term we is automatically a douchebag.

Steve Stone says "We" when he's on with B&B. Stone isn't on the White Sox. Dan is silent when Steve does this. Sone also once called it "Cyber Metrics". "Cyber Metrics" from your baseball expert? Really? Dan didn't correct him.

Stone is a Sox broadcaster. Doesn't that mean the Sox pay him? He has every right to say we.

I've said it before (again, make sure you tell anyone that I told you, albeit on Twitter or CSFMB), that if the caller makes good points, in Dan's mind, then he allows the "we" crap. He's not consistent.

I saw it. I don't think team broadcasters should say "we" just cuz the Sox pay them. Doesn't matter. They don't play on the team. Vendors and parking lot attendents get paid by the Sox as well. Do they get to say "we"? Of course not.

CBS pays Dan and Terry. They shouldn't say "we" when talking about "The NFL Today" or "The CBS evening News".

You're just wrong on this. If you get paid by a company, and you actually like that company, you have every right to say we when you refer to them. It's as simple as that.

No. Lots of companies have different branches. Same with sports teams. You don't claim the other branches. You either play on the team or you don't. It's that simple.

That means that Robin Ventura and Kenny Williams have no right to say we. Thats how fucking stupid your logic is sometimes man. No wonder strippers hate you.

Alright. You can only claim a group if their success or failure has something to do with you. There. Now Kenny and Ventura are in. Stone is still out!!!!

bigfan thinks you're wrong. Announcers have a huge effect on crowd attendance and team performance.

Fine. Then he has to be accountable if he wants to use "we" since he has something to do with the failure. If Stone ever says "We failed Jerry Reinsdorf and the ballclub because our attendence is bad due to our horrible broadcasts" I will allow him to say "we" when it comes to the actual team. He'll never do that. So he can't say "We".

I can say we.

In the NBA, we won a big OT game last night to start the circus trip.
In the NFL, we got an easy game against the Lions this week where we should score 30+
In MLB, we choked away a division lead this past season.
We dont watch the NHL.

Someone should call up and ask if Dan is aware of what the Bears refer to as "The 4th phase" and what it implies.
