Why is this shocking news that some players have brain injuries? I think everyone is aware that football is a physical game. I also think there's been a ridiculous amount of focus on a small amount of players who have had post-football suicides.

The bernstein Brigade is constantly whining and hand-wringing about head injuries and then on Sunday they lap up football like dogs lapping up their own vomit. Who ya crappin'?

I fully expect Brady Quinn to be labeled a piece of crap for making the 1st statement even though the "dumb gladiator" understands the situation better than B&B ever could.

Listening today probably isn't a wise decision.

But don't you see? One of the leading CTE researchers is a diehard meatball Packers fan! That makes everything okay!

It doesn't, of course. It's not Really Interesting that someone who closely studies something as deleterious to quality of life as traumatic brain degeneration can also encourage an activity that fosters traumatic brain degeneration. What would be Really Interesting is if this leading CTE researcher were also an accomplished concert pianist. This whole thing, on the other hand, is just hypocritical.

I wonder if Dan would defend an oncologist who smokes two packs a day. "He contains multitudes! I separate work from home every day!"

I hope they at least give him credit for this statement, however damaging to The Narrative it might be.

I don't know what they're going to talk about, but I will be tuning in, assuming I can get reception on my Blackberry (!).

Show is always good after an ugly Bears loss.

Oh, hey, you'll like this, Beardown:

I've been listening to the Loop again lately because, I dunno, I want to emotionally regress to being 15 years old again or something, but anyway, the news guy on their absolutely execrable morning show is Rob Hart, who was kind of an up-and-coming guy at 720 for a while before leaving to do FM News, and then I'm guessing they reassigned him to the Loop when that station flipped (or more accurately, flopped). Anyway, they were talking about Brandon Marshall's Viagra revelations the other day, and he chimes in "that sounds like some urban legend, that hey guys, I heard Viagra is gonna make us Good At Football!" and I just groaned a thousand groans because now this means that Team Bernstein has even spread its phrasal tentacles to the goddamn butt rock station! I'm not going to be able to listen to fucking Foreigner without someone saying that "Cold as Ice" is going to Bring Out The Hockey People. What a fucking disaster.

My presets:

1 Score
2 WFMT
3 WBEZ
4 i101
5 The Loop
6 WGN

Maybe I contain multitudes.

You have a car with presets of AM and FM stations on the same group?

Dave, what part of what he is saying in regards to today's game is wrong? The passing game was not to blame today. Cutler was good. Marshall was good. The defense did let them down today. He's referring to a passing game that put up 17 points as "pure brilliance" that "saved the day." The catch that led to the field goal wasn't a busted coverage, it was "a display of raw talent from both players."

Dan's entire attitude on the recent-vintage Bears is as follows:

1. Gee golly willikers, Cutler and Marshall are good!
2. WHY DOES THE REST OF THE TEAM CONSTANTLY LET THEM DOWN
3. Herpa derpa landmarks derp derpity dooooooooo

Take the meatiest of meatball statements about how the Cover-2 sucks, or how the Bears should get off the bus running, or how 1985 was the greatest year in human history, and Bernstein's weekly mash notes to Cutler and Marshall stack up with any of them.

Don't crap me now, no, no, no.

Dan has consistently said he doesn't want the game to change because he loves watching it.

Thanks Franky.

Man, some of y'all have tunnel vision when you get on your narratives. Not unlike Dan Bernstein himself.

Which is mistaking abject hypocrisy for nuance. It should be implicit in anyone with a functioning moral compass that to express that much concern and dismay with something is to want to ameliorate that concern and dismay. If something really bothers you, you do something about it. If you don't do something about it, then it doesn't really bother you. One way or the other, he's full of shit: either he's just some guy who likes sports but has to be a big loud intellectual carelord to feel significant, or he is legitimately upset by what's happening to these guys but can't find himself being skeptical of football at a job that requires everyone to whip up a frenzy about football at all times. Either way, "I hate concussions but I love football" is fundamentally incompatible.

I disagree.

"I hate fighting but I love hockey."

Is that no different?

"I hate takeout slides but I love baseball."

Same difference.

I dont think so. You can take fighting and takeout slides out of hockey and baseball, and it would still resemble the same sport. You cant do anything to take concussions out of football and keep it the same sport.

It is different. People who don't like fighting in hockey (and 95% of the time, I don't) are able to express their wishes that the game be changed. I love hockey, but hate fighting; ergo, I want any fighting that isn't retaliating for illegal predatory action stripped from the game. Dan insists that football not be changed. There's the difference.

No, it's not, because Bernstein specifically wants the game changed in regards to those.

He doesn't want any changes to football. That's the problem. He can get all worried about concussions, but unless he's worried enough to want to do something about it then it doesn't make sense.

How wonderful it would be if NHL games stopped pausing for two goons to clumsily grope each other apropos of absolutely nothing.

Chasing down a guy for an uncalled dirty hit and beating the crap out of him is cool, though. Gotta keep 'em honest out there!

That's exactly the point. How can he lament concussions all week long and whine about the seriousness of CTE and then suddenly enjoy football on Sunday? He should just shut the fuck up about the head trauma.

I think going back to leather hemlets and eliminating a lot of the padding would cut down on concussions, but that's not gonna happen.

I hardly listen at all anymore. I have zero interest in Penn State or CTE.

They haven't talked about this much at all over the past couple of weeks. The lack of Goff has freshened things up a bit as the show hasn't fallen into the same repetitive crap.
