Look I cant relate to that lifestyle either and id like to think that if I was back in my mid 20's and had as much money as these guys do , I woudnt be out till 4am at the clubs with my friends, doing stupid shit but I cant say that I wouldnt have. I dont own a gun and I know I certainly wouldnt ever have brought one into a club at any age but then again ( and the Lodge can feel free to correct me if I get out over my skis on this one) while I grew up poor, I never had the circumstances that a lot of these guys did. Where theres a lot of jealousy of these guys from the people they grew up with and around, which makes them targets just by being them. Where the league tells you at their rookie symposium to avoid the guys you grew up with and pretty much lead a quiet lifestyle. Some of them arent going to listen and go out and get themselves in trouble., sometimes through no fault of their own. Its a slippery slope to navigate , one that Bernstein fails at every time.

I see how someone would choose LeBron, but while they were obviously very different players, I think they had a similar level of talent. Obviously LeBron is much more athletic, but I believe Bird would help me win a championship before LeBron did, all other things being equal.

Perhaps the later. I'm just sayin if LeBron decided that he was going to stop Bird from scoring I think he could do it fairly easily. Christ he's just as tall and way quicker and like 100 pounds heavier.

Well, LeBron is a special player and I'd certainly rank him above Larry Bird in the pantheon of basketball stars, but Bird was guarded by all kinds of guys, some of them better defenders than LeBron, and he always got his shot off.

There is something to be said for adjusting to the current style of the game. Bird played at the weight he found most effective. In the modern NBA, he'd bulk up much more.

One of the biggest examples here is Jordan. 1986 Jordan looks like he'd be crushed by Lebron. 1996 Jordan looks like he'd be able to compete physically.

It's no different than talking about how many 7 foot players can now shoot 3 pointers.

If Kevin Durant played in the 80s, he'd likely be a below average 3 point shooter too.

Everyone always says the best comparison for Larry Bird in today's game is Dirk Nowitzski, although Dirk is more like a better Dave Cowens. But anyway, how did it work out with LeBron shutting him down? There's no chance LeBron would shut down Larry Bird.

Yep, Bird would get his. Of course Im sure no coach in the 80's thought of putting their best defensive on Bird and instead they just let him run wild and get his 24 / 10/ 6 every night. Then again no coach in the 80's ever had the super human talents of an LeBron James to work with too.
