Yes, we need to know more. Got to give the families of those gang kids the respect they deserve when dead.

Whatever happened to your alter ego slumlord?

I'm gonna just let Big Fan continue to talk and pretend to know my stance on the issue, while allowing him to be completely dead wrong in the process. That's more funner for me.

This is going to come off as dumb but why do gangs exist? Why are they allowed? I understand the need to have money but it doesn't seem worth it. Plus there is a morality issue that doesn't really fit.

It's easier to sell drugs then actually go out and get a job basically.

Gangs existed long before the drug trade did in this country.

I won't go into a long drawn-out history lesson here, but gangs started in the 60s during the Civil Rights era as an answer to the police brutality that was going on as well as the lack of police responsiveness in black neighborhoods. The drug trade (especially crack in the late 70s and early 80s) is what caused the gangs to become what they are now.

Power

And pride.

And a sense of family and belonging amongst people who otherwise wouldn't have that.

Gangs give you a sense of belonging, and usually, an income. But mostly, they give you a sense of dignity. Men are men, and men'll seek pride. Everybody here's got a badge to wear. You think bangers are walking
around with their heads down, saying, "Oh man, I didn't make anything out of my life. I'm in a gang." No, man! They're walking around saying, "Man, I'm in a gang. I'm with them."

Organized crime and not so organized groups of immigrants existed for protection but look what it has turned into. That's what I don't understand.

Power of what, KS? It's not really part of normal society. I'd almost say it's lack of power and frustration.

That's weird because I can't imagine pride in most of what goes on there. Why not find a better or more positive "family" or belonging? And where is the disconnect for the actual family. How do you fix that?

Most of these kids come from broken and dysfunctional family situations. Most often they are very poor. When you're walking down the block broke, hungry, and unloved and you see an older drug dealer flashing thousands of dollars, telling you "this could be yours", while promising you protection from bullies and shit, what do you expect the decision to be?

To you and me.

To them, it's a way to feel good about themselves.

And that's a West Wing quote about gangs from the 9/11 themed episode. But it backed up my point, so I used it.

That's what I'm asking. Why is there that disconnect? Why are there so many broken homes and dysfunctional families? Why isn't there a way to stop that? Who ends up having a better life the drug dealer or the person who has been educated or works. There is a temporary satisfaction I guess but it gets replaced by stress, fear, and they aren't better off.

TP, I dunno it doesn't seem to be working very well.

I don't think it's a solid life plan either.

But I have nothing that can relate to the type of abject poverty and familial issues of the majority of gang members.

Rebuilding the family structure in this country is the best place to start.

More than 70% of prisoners in this country come from broken or single parent homes.

Gangs provide a mentor ship of sorts to young males that is best modeled and developed within a family.

Temporary satisfaction is preferrable to no satisfaction.

Yeah, maybe. I have a little experience with it. What I'd always go back to with the person I know is there are choices being made. I think most know they are bad ones with negative consequences. Responsibility needs to be taken then have a desire and willingness to change. I don't understand why she wouldn't because the life she was living looked like shit.

That's hard though. There has to be the want to do that. And How?

Redevelop a culture that has respect for the dignity of all persons and a respect for women more specifically.

There needs to be a want and a desire.

In this case, women need to start demanding it.

Still not sure why the police cant shake down the other gang members at a funeral.

If you think they are there after Aunt Bessy, think again.

All this jargon about the family being developed, etc is great and correct, but this isnt about that. It's about seeing gangs in public acting as a gang (even if it is to give respect to the dead) and removing them from the street if they choose to act as a gang.

From my limited observations I can't see how that would go. The women are carrying much of the load and should be respected anyway or are too busy trying to get through it to be demanding anything.

If I were the dead kids family, I would be irate that his hoodlum friends showed up to his funeral knowing that they are the cause of it. I would be so mad at the situation that I would want all of those punks to pay for his death.

Unless it was a mob wake at Cumberland Chapels. Then the police an da boys can all get together for drinks at Gianotti's afterward. Maybe Rahm will even show up and hand out some contracts for the airport.
