A coach that can't beat the elite and can't consistently beat the Packers (his main goal) needs to be working elsewhere.

If they lose to Minnesota and GB, they will be 8-6. Their playoff hopes won't be gone, but depending on what the 6-6 teams do, it will be a fight for a spot.

It seems like a distant memory since The SCORE's Terry Boers said from his "guy" in Lake Forest that the Bears were in the early stages of a contract extension for HC Lovie Smith. I've got to think that if the Bears end up missing the NFL Playoffs again, Lovie can't return...Can he?

I'm sure Terry would tell you that "things changed", his story was true, and you're an idiot if you doubt him.

If he does return ,that will tell Bear Nation one thing, Phil Emery is nothing more than a glorified scout. No GM in his second year would not want to put his stamp on a club with his own guy after repeated failures of the current HC.

Phil Emery took the GM job knowing full well that Lovie Smith was his head coach going in.

Chew on this for a moment. What if the Bears make the NFL Playoffs but bellyflop in Round 1? Is that still good enough for Smith to return?

Lovie right now is on par with the guys in Philly & San Diego. Just good enough to avoid the ax but not good enough to win it all. Both those guys are getting fired, time for Lovie to move on too IF they get embarrased in any round of the playoffs.

The other day Terry said they offered Lovie a two-year extension and Lovie said "no dice." Likely he knows if he gets fired, he'll likely get a big fat 4 or 5 year deal from somebody else.

Unfortunately this is the most likely outcome.

Agreed - the Bears can still win their division if they win their remaining divisional games, but it's probably likely they stumble in at least one (probably at home vs the Packers) which would send them to either GB or NY in Round 1, and likely ending their season. If the Bears makes the playoffs, I think Lovie is not only back, but likely to get an extension.

I really have no idea if Terry has a credible source or just throws something out there, but with all of the head coaching turnover expected after this season, if Lovie was included in that, I think he would quickly rise to the top of the list for quite a few teams.

The players like Lovie and the owners like Lovie. Making the playoffs gets him his extension even after they get their ass handed to them in round 1.

There's a real chance the Bears don't make it. That loss to Seattle last Sunday hurt, especially when tiebreakers are involved and it was a non-division, NFC loss.

I think that's probably true if they make the playoffs.

Any loss in the conference hurts, but I think Seattle, with 3 of 4 remaining at home (based on what I remembered seeing) where they don't lose often, I think they will be in the playoffs. I don't think the Bears are necessarily competing against them, it would be one of those 6-6 teams surging late in the season. In all reality, that's either Washington or Minnesota. If the Vikings lose to the Bears, they are all but eliminated. Dallas and Washington have to go at least 3-1 to have a chance (along with a Bears collapse). Yes, the Bears could lose the last 4 games, but I think that's unlikely. My guess is that they finish the season 10-6.

Right now, the Bears definitely have a tiebreaker over the Cowboys. That's about it.

The only thing that should keep Lovie Smith a Bears HC would be to win the Superbowl. How this team is currently constructed, coupled with this coaching staff doesn't give me a lot of hope. Lovie has gotten his ass handed to him by McCarthy for the last 3 seasons, and has not competed well against top-tier competition.

If the Bears make the playoffs, they will be a first round out.

Right now, that's what I'm looking at as well. It'll be a moot point if the Bears bellyflop in 3 of the last 4 games. I think they need 3 wins to make the NFL Playoffs.

They also eliminate one of their competitors with a win this weekend. If they improve to 9-4 this weekend, they are all but in. Washington and Dallas still play each other so one of these teams is getting one more loss.

TB still has trips to New Orleans and Atlanta (they may have nothing to play for).

Washington has Baltmore at home (but coming off a loss) this weekend and close out at home vs Dallas with 2 easy road games.

Dallas still has road games at Cincinnati and Washington, and home games vs. the Steelers and Saints. They look like an 8-8 team to me, at best, maybe 7-9.

The Redskins would be the team to watch. They are playing well, and have their toughest remaining games at home. Can they run the table with that defense? I doubt it, which is why I think the Bears can probably get in without being much better than 9 wins.

It might very well be. The Bears won't have CB Tim Jennings Sunday. According to ZZ's Twitter, a shoulder injury will indeed sideline Jennings Sunday in Minnesota.

They should fine that guy on the Seahawks for lowering his helmet and using it as a weapon.

The Bears were never gonna win anything of consequence this year. They HAD a chance to win their division with all the injuries to the Packers. They will probably still get a playoff berth, but it will only give them a chance to prove once again, that they are not very good. They can beat average and below average teams, but are 1-4 against teams with a winning record. That lone victory vs the Colts was in Luck's first NFL start and I doubt the Bears would beat them now. Cutler will probably suck against the Packers again when the battle for the division has it's most important fight at Soldier field later this month. Just not a real contender...

Yes,the Bears are "BumBeaters" but in the playoffs, never underestimate a team that has the ability to take the ball from you. If the Bears get in,I would not bet against them simply for that reason.

They can still win their division by simply winning their remaining divisional games. This doesn't seem likely, but they will be favored to win 2 of these 3, and probably slight underdogs in the 3rd.

I don't think they are going to do more though that make a playoff appearance.

No way. Lovie will end up like Jauron & Wanny, coaching Defense the rest of his career.

And I disagree with the B&B narrative that Emery has complete control & can fire Lovie without consulting Phillips or the McClaskeys. I doubt that there are many GM's who can fire the head coach without consulting with their teams management & ownership teams.
