I used to rent shop space from a guy who ended up owning four businesses in a row on a busy state highway- he built his first storage building in 1989 just to put some of the back lot to use- that turned into about a thousand units all together on three sites. Each month would see 1-5 units seized for non-payment. He absolutely would raid them asap legally for valuables.
By the early 2000's he was well enough off to be much less interested in other folks' used junk- he used to stop by on his way out back and offer to sell me a unit sight unseen- but I had to clean it out overnight so he could re-rent it. I bought a couple for $30 or $50. Mostly household junk that I donated to a charity resale shop, some scrap metal, etc. Was not worth my time after I had kids at home.
Missed out on a neat 1960's F-150. One of the earliest abandoned units turned out to be 4'X10' filled with old porn mags. We hauled three pickup loads to the dumpster and chucked 'em ( I may have chosen a few for further research), all about a month before an episode of LA Law showed us how valuable the old stuff could have been.
I was amazed people would put dirty dishes into a storage unit, then walk away from wedding albums, kids pictures, etc for a couple of hundred bucks.

Whew, I feel JORR-ish.
