'World's Best Beer' Finally Available

By Christina Ng

Beer aficionados are pouncing at the rare opportunity to buy one of the world's most elusive and revered beers for the first - and perhaps only - time in the United States.

It is called Westvleteren XII, and it is often hailed as the "world's best beer" by reviewers and fans.

Westvleteren XII is produced by Trappist monks in Belgium and sold at the abbey of Saint Sixtus in the Belgian countryside. The beer can usually only be purchased by reservation at the abbey - and reservations are extremely hard to come by.

But when the abbey found itself hurting for money for an expensive renovation, the monks reluctantly made the decision to sell the beer outside of the walls of the monastery on a one-time-only basis.

"I think it will be the last [time]," Westvleteren Brewery spokesman Mark Bode told NPR. "They say, 'We are monks, we don't want to be too commercial. We needed some money to help us buy the new abbey and that's it,' Back to normal again."

Beginning today, limited quantities of the beer are being sold in the U.S. and abroad. A number of stores have been sent "bricks" of the beer, which include six bottles and two glasses from the monastery. The gift box retails for $84.99.

"The phone has been ringing off the hook," Megan McBrayer, manager at New York City's Beer Table Pantry, told ABCNews.com. She said the store received 24 cases of the beer and has already sold many of them.

McBrayer said beer lovers are taken with "the whole mystique about it and the rarity of it."

"It consistently rates as one of the best beers in the world," she said. "It's been something that [beer lovers] have wanted for a long time, but it's been completely unattainable."

Have you not been to a liquor store since June?

It's probably the best of the non specialty beers they sell.

I'm relatively new to actively trying to be more beer-centric and try new things. Rah served at The Ram when I first met her, so she would bring Growlers home of different stuff every weekend. Some friends of mine are home brewers (Low Dive), brew pubs/beer bars are opening up around my sister (Revolution) and around me (Tighthead & Beer Market)....

So, that's my experience...

Anyway, my point/question is, to Bagels post...: Is making the hardest thing to drink a "thing" in the craft/local brewing industry?
Like, if one guy who works at the company sort of likes it or the one guy who drinks everything says "it's awesome!", they release it?

I mean, the Ram doesn't do it. I can enjoy all their beers. Same with Tighthead and Mickey Finn's. Revolution has a couple of beers that you can only have one of, but I can drink all of theirs as well. I think I can say the same for Half Acre too...

It just seems that some of these beers are just stupid for sake of being undrinkable by 99% of us who like most of "their" beers anyway.
Am I off here?

Bagels was just taking a shot at CIJ. I recommended Alpha Klaus last week, and he said it was awful, and tasted like cigarettes.

I don't understand what you mean by undrinkable. Do you mean because of a prohibitive price (that world's best beer is $90 for a six pack), scarcity of the product or the taste.

I think these micros produce one beer that is the equivalent to an auto maker's concept car. They hold it out as kind of a thing to get people talking about their company but never produce it for mass consumption.

I simply cannot understand how one beer can be judged the best. My taste leans more in the stout/porter direction. An ale could almost never hope to be a best beer in the world for my tastes. I would think this point would be obvious to the beer officianados of the world

This whole Rah thing seems biscuitty to me.

Stouts and porters are both ales. Technically there are only two types of beer - ales and lagers. Has to do with the yeast and temperature it ferments.

My friend and I are on the fence about going to the release next year. I'm sure I posted on a thread before, but we went to the 2011 release and it was kind of cold, but not too bad. They opened the doors at 11, I think. We got in line at about 8 and I got ticket #153 or so. Got our case, put it in the car, went into the brewpub and had a few different ones. Had a great time. 2012 we go again with another guy. There's some discussion about maybe leaving at like 6 since it has become more popular, then when we finally get there, it's midnight (losing the hour due to time zone stuff) and the guy is like, maybe we should leave at 4 just to be sure. We all agree after some more discussion, so basically grab a nap, then up and in line. This time, there are guys camped out in tents, and we are all the way over to the commercial fleet gas station on the far end of the city block. Freezing cold, no sun, beers in line are freezing in your cup if you aren't drinking them fast enough. Come about 8 oclock, tent city awakens; other people in line have visitors line hopping. They only have 400 cases to distribute, and unofficial line counts have us anywhere from 250th in line to 650th. Turns out we were about #430. And there are tons of people behind us in line. They decide to cut the allotment to 12 beers a piece to try to appease those in the line, but literally people that showed up at 5:30 were getting shut out. Oh and after you get your beer, you can get in a separate line to try to get into the brewpub. We didn't even try. Wasn't that fun. I'd need to hear that they changed the way they are distributing stuff in order to go again, I think. But the beer is really good.

I will never wait in line for a beer release. My buddy got shot out once at Founders for KBS release, and once for Dark Lord Day at 3 Floyd's. There is no fucking way that I am driving three and a half hours to Grand Rapids, standing in the cold and dark for hours, and walking away with nothing. I would rather read every one of CGS' posts.

I have a beer guy who says he can get KBS when it is released in April. I have been getting friendly with him, and he stashes beers for me.
