I thought maybe build a door before a door, sort of like a screening area. Tonight on the ABC 10PM news, some security expert said the same thing.

How about each school adopt a trained attack dog?

Basically, tragedy will strike again, but seconds count. Anything to slow someone down is a help.

What do you suggest?

Fully armed security guard at main entrance. He/She allows people into a school. If that person is taken out by chance, then the shooter is not allowed entrance into the school.

Gunsmithing should be taught along side English class. That should be enough deterrent.

Its gonna have to come down to metal detectors/xrays and actual police officers instead of security guards

Thats how it is in most of the inner city schools here and it seems to work as far as shootings are concerned

This is already being incorporated into modern elementary schools. In our daughter's school you have to be buzzed in and then pass through the main office to access the classrooms.

Couldn't the kid have just shot his way through this? Becomes even less secure if he really was the son of a teacher and someone the office recognized.

FYI - Channel 7 was reporting that the kid broke out a window to gain entry to the school. The school had a door that had to be buzzed open to gain normal entry.

We need better window installation laws, and better window breaking laws?

At Leo,we had an off duty Chicago Cop. Also ,locked doors. When Benji Wilson got killed and CVS and Simeon where fighting outside the School the administration got the chains and padlocks they used at night and chained all the doors locked so no one could get in.

'Elmhurst Steve' jokes aside, we have pretty good schools here in Elmhurst and a good tax base to pay for them. With that, the schools don't have money to keep up with what they have now. Class sizes get bigger, teachers/teacher aides are let go, programs cut.

I would rather have another teacher in my kids school than a police officer at the front door. Especially if you figure that 95% of the time the cop could be shot before anyone even knew what was going on. You hear over and over about how hard it is to stop the "lone gunman". Assuming we didn't care about the consequences, Anyone of us could walk up to a police officer and shoot them before they even had their gun out.

I was talking to a right wing friend yesterday. Of course he had all the fucking answers. His take was that when someone does something crazy like that, there are always those closest to him who know he might go off and it's their responsibility to stop it before it occurs. That is so damn stupid I wanted to slap his face over the phone.

He referenced a case my former partners were involved in that went to the Illinois Supreme Court. My longtime business partner and close friend attempted to kill another business partner over a deal gone bad. He had mentioned that he wanted to hurt or kill the guy in passing, but who takes that shit seriously? I've read what I would consider more credible threats on this message board. Anyway, he actually did it. So this guy's point was that the other partners and I were well aware of his plan and it was our duty to stop it. That was the basis of the guy who got shot's lawsuit too. It was dismissed at every level.

The funny thing is, if I were going to "report" anyone I know for possible lunatic behavior in the future, it would be the guy I was talking to on the phone.

From the US Secret Service threat assessment on safety in schools (http://www.secretservice.gov/ntac_ssi.shtml)

In 2002, the U.S. Secret Service completed the Safe School Initiative, a study of school shootings and other school-based attacks that was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education. The study examined school shootings in the United States as far back as 1974, through the end of the school year in 2000, analyzing a total of 37 incidents involving 41 student attackers. The study involved extensive review of police records, school records, court documents, and other source materials, and included interviews with 10 school shooters. The focus of the study was on developing information about the school shooters's pre-attack behaviors and communications. The goal was to identify information about a school shooting that may be identifiable or noticeable before the shooting occurs, to help inform efforts to prevent school-based attacks.

The study found that school shootings are rarely impulsive acts. Rather, they are typically thought out and planned out in advance. In addition, prior to most shootings other kids knew the shooting was to occur - but did not alert an adult. Very few of the attackers, however, ever directed threats to their targets before the attack. The study findings also revealed that there is no "profile" of a school shooter; instead, the students who carried out the attacks differed from one another in numerous ways. However, almost every attacker had engaged in behavior before the shooting that seriously concerned at least one adult - and for many had concerned three or more different adults.

The findings from the study suggest that some school attacks may be preventable, and that students can play an important role in prevention efforts. Using the study findings, the Secret Service and Department of Education have modified the Secret Service threat assessment approach for use in schools - to give school and law enforcement professionals tools for investigating threats in school, managing situations of concern, and creating safe school climates.

Now, obviously, this is different as the shooter was not attending the school, but obviously there are cases where these signs are shown. Speaking personally, I was a very quiet, nerdy kid in grade school and was often beaten up and once hospitalized when a kid bashed my head into a chair rack. My parents knew I was having problems and did what they could at the time, including taking me to a priest, counseling, etc. They probably should have taken me out of the school, but I am sure I would have dealt with similar transgressions elsewhere. It has left a scar both literally and figuratively for most of my life. At the time, I had many thoughts of suicide and well... worse. Honestly, I never had the courage to follow through on anything, but as a parent now, I can't see what more they could have done had I done something stupid. With what you said, I was just thinking had they assumed the worst and had me committed, I may never have lived the wonderful memories I have had of the past fifteen years. Dunno. Crazy how things work out I suppose.

There is nothing you can do. Most schools systems have no money as it is. Especially public schools in big cities. Teachers can't get paid what they're worth. No money for resources. Now you're gonna pay for security in the tens of thousands of elementary and high schools across the country? C'mon.

They have lock down systems in schools. But if somebody wants to blow the door down with a gun and shoot everybody, there is nothing you can do.

The fact is that this most likely will never happen again. Or it's a once every 20 or 30 year type of thing.

Nothing will be done and you hope it never happens again. It most likely won't happen again.

You make school safer by making society safer-- gun control/law reforms and mental health care need to be a priority. I don't know what the solution is, but that has to be where it starts. I'm not saying ban all guns and lock up anybody that has a mental issue, but its gotta be talked about in the open and has to be fixed.

Or get rid of Jerry Riensdorf.

Seems to me that if we can tens of billions to fight some bullshit manufactured war we could certainly find some cash for metal detectors, maybe an armed guard, surveilliance and security cameras wired in to the local PD and myriad other ways that if not prevent, maybe make it hard as fuck for stuff like this to continue to happen.

Excellent point....well said!

It's true. Basically, nothing is full proof but if you can take seconds off the clock by delaying some nutjob,it might save lives.
