Right around the time it transitioned from middays to afternoons...(and no, I'm not saying that has anything to do with it...just pointing out when the show started to sour for me)...

I don't want to blame the economy, but there was something about the world becoming a terrible place that made impassioned defenses of the establishment kind of distasteful. I think "the great thing about the recession is that architects are working as really talented landscapers" was the first "dude, what the fuck" moment of what would become many.

I was as big of a fan as it got, and it's soured for me a lot in the past couple of years. A few things:

    real important radio (PSU, CTE)
    Theo being hired: fun/funny to bash incompetent Jim Hendry, not so much to genuflect to the Theocracy
    Trying to be football experts: one of my favorite parts of the show was that they (correctly, in my worldview) thought football was goofy and stupid. Now, with Bowen and others it's as serious as Dan reading Fangraphs

Beardown ruining the board didn't help much either.

Very good post Reared, and all of that is pretty much why the show isn't as enjoyable for me either.

I do remember you saying something like that. B&B are at their best when they are goofy. Dan can be funny and silly when he wants to I have no earthly idea why he chooses to be so yelly and negative all the time. Heck, just getting rid of the callers would make the show 10x better. I have no idea why calling into a sports talk radio show is still a thing. The same arguments have just been rehashed over and over again since the advent of AM radio.

There can be callers, as long as they're not all HOW COME DID DA BEARSE WON'T PUT URLACHER AT FULLBACK ON DA GOAL LINE BRAPBRAPBRAPBRAPBRAP. And I don't want them to be guest-heavy, because they're usually half as bad with guests as they are with callers, except instead of being overly aggressive they're just overly passive and self-effacing. And it's not like they boast a bible of a Rolodex here. Like, how much more Ethan Skolnick can you possibly want in your life?
