I wasn't impressed when Kenny traded for him and I am not impressed with this deal either.

Feels a little Hendry like on that 3rd or 4th year

I haven't been paying attention but did the Cubs get him? I believe going from the AL to the NL will make him better this season. Trade bait too.

Don't worry it will probably fall apart when it turns out he was just using the Cubs as leverage to get more money from Texas

He's better than Sanchez for less money. Why don't you like it?

I guess that's about the market rate. Better than trying to lose 100 again.

Yeah I don't really get it. I assume most people think something is wrong with Jackson because he has been on so many teams in his career and can't really seem to stick. He is a decent pitcher who can eat innings and keep the Cubs from exposing their terrible minor league starters. It's a fine move. Not exactly chilling the champagne but I wouldn't have for Sanchez either. This team needs starters that aren't Travis Wood. Or Kerry Wood.

Why spend that much money now? He'll be worthless in a few years if he isn't already worthless.

Why not spend the money? It's not our money. And it's not like it will hamstring them for future moves. The Cubs are way under the luxury tax threshold moving forward.

Len Kasper has an enthusiasm, baseball knowledge, and the ability to present it, that could make me excited about giving Freddie Jackson fifty million.

I am in this boat. I'd rather expose our crappy minor league "talent" to see if any of it is major league worthy. But that contract is reasonable for a major league quality starter. We all better hope the Dodgers strategy backfires like it for the Mets. Because if they are truly successful, the price of poker has permanently gone way up.

Then people who think 2014 will be a good year are way off. I have been saying 2015 is the earliest, but it may be longer than that. They have to build the majority of the roster from within. I don't have any interest in watching journeymen on the field. I'd rather see our supposed farm system fail. But whatever. I have faith in the current management team.

At least the Bulls are giving enough effort and having success to give us something real to cheer for. It sucks that the Bears fell off the map and hockey is gone.

I don't think it takes as long to turn a team around in baseball as you think. You can both rebuild and develop talent and sign Edwin Jackson I don't believe it is an either/or equation. Like Big Chicagoan said earlier he isn't even officially signed yet so it will probably dissapear into smoke like everything else the Cubs have tried to do this offseason.

Phil, I think the Cubs have only two or three legit players on their roster. Castro and Rizzo and maybe an arm or two. So I know you can rebuild relatively quickly, but a weak upper minor league talent pool and no major league talent makes me think we have three years plus to be good (i.e. 90+ wins).

*sigh* come on guys, if they would just sign a couple guys off the scrap heap they would be fine.

Hey you are probably right but baseball is a funny game and things change pretty quickly. I don't think Edwin Jackson is the missing piece in a championship run but I don't think its a terrible move either. It's just what it is. I think people sometimes get weird about baseball salaries because of the amount of money involved but since there isn't a hard cap who cares. Baseball revenues are through the roof right now.

I don't understand why'd they invest this year on a pitcher. I thought they would make a move or two like this maybe next off-season. I know their pitching in the minors is lacking and they have more positional players in their future wave of young talent, but if the Cubs aren't good for 2 more seasons, what's the point of spending $13 million per on a talented, but somewhat underachieving arm?

But if it's a 4 year deal you realize that he would be under contract for next year then yes? Like it's not a 1 year 12 MIL deal like the Yankees gave Youk. So it can be more for next year than this year anyway....

I guess the thought process is in order to attract future high level free agents, they can't lose another 100 games this year. Or maybe the renewal rate for season tickets is really lagging??

Bottom line is guys that pitch 200+ innings year in and year out now have a market of 12-15M+ per annum.

I will certainly not miss seeing Chris fucking Volstad and his ERA of 6+ pitching for The Cub again that's for sure.

Claiming year 3 for $13 m and year for $14 M....why? so hendry like....

Jackson has proven to stay nowhere for 4 years, so why plan on owing him more in the later years? If you are asking me to suck it up this year, then do the same, so when this team gets better this guy is not an anchor if he sucks.

Jackson has had a tendency to start off hot whereever he is, so pay him more upfront...and make him more tradeable if needed.

He is 3rd to 5th starting pitcher talent at any moment....Maybe even a #2 for a 5-7 game stretch...so I am fine with him on the team, would just like to see a deal that coincides with the team goals.

I also do think this team needs to do well this year.,....an 80 win season should be the goal..something to build from/.
