I don't even need to fish out the irony in that post.

C'mon. Don't be so hard on yourself. I never, specifically, said you were the dumb, naive, simpleton.

This is it in a nutshell. Despite being from Homewood, Leery loves to act like he's Mr. Chicago: constantly name-dropping mom-and-pop greasy spoons, instructing us on which neighborhoods we should avoid, extensively plumbing the cultural milieu of Hyde Park (though, to his credit, I don't think he's ever recounted an event that occurred "at the corner of Division and Chicago"). When he talks about the manure smell, he's implying that Champaign-Urbana lacks the requisite sophistication to attract a dazzling urbanite like himself--that is is, quite literally, a cowtown. Then he brings it all home by making a crack about how everyone outside the city limits is racist before finally concluding that it's all good because he had a really, really really great experience at DePaul--where, ohbytheway, he got to work with Lou Canellis and Jeff Joniak, and both those guys are really, really, really great.

Why wouldn't the murder/crime rate in Chicago be a turn off for Larry over the smell of Champaign? Especially in Larry's South side that he so proudly claims. If he's gonna take that dig and Champaign, then those down state crackers can throw the South side body count back at him. Just sayin'.

Are you really asking someone to explain to you why living in Chicago would be preferable to Champaign/Urbana?

Because the chance of a big deal athlete like Laurence Wilcox Holmes being accosted by some ne'er-do-well is infantesimal.

A college student's life in champaign is different than the locals life style. Do I really need to explain that to you? Of course you wouldn't want to live there after college.

Yeah but college kids can enjoy the city of Chicago outside of going to parties and crap. You can get blackout drunk just as easily at DePaul or Illinois but when you sober up it's always nice to be in one of the greatest cities in the world instead of fucking Urbana. I am sure that Laurence didn't only choose not to go to U of I because of some manure smell. But the real question is why do you give a fuck?

Beardown, you've made a grievous tactical error when you've made people kinda-sorta defend Larry.

2 or 3 people agreed with me in this thread. They thought Larry was full of shit as well.

The people defending Larry are the ones that just look for reasons to hate on me.

 I actually prefer your posts to anything LoHo has ever done. I really don't like Larry but you are Beardown Quixote on this one. Not sure what you are getting at. Some people on the radio embellish facts in the name of entertainment? Um ok cool.

Anyway, I'm on Christmas vacation, drinking wine and listening to youtube Christmas songs. I'll interject them all night.

I LOVE THIS SONG DURING CHRISTMAS TIME.

No one looks for a reason to hate on you.

It's usually obvious.

Your initial post said Laurence must have been too poor or not smart enough to attend Illinois. As if there were no other reason.

And has been pointed out, there were numerous reasons for Laurence to be in Lincoln Park rather than Urbana.

As I said, his "cow smell" comment was him thinking he was clever. He wasn't.

I didn't think this conversation would go this long. I read a post of Larry's claims, told everybody it was a lie, expected all of you to accept it and thought it would be the end of it. Jeez.

What I truly don't get is it's not like he didn't go to U of I to go to the Illinois Center of Broadcasting like drinky. DePaul is a good school

Speculating that his parents might not have been able to afford the U of I is far from calling them poor. Speculating that Larry wasn't smart enough to get in is very fair based on his track record of being a liar.

U of I is cheaper than DePaul...

I guess it'll be a difference of opinion but there's just something so unique about college towns. I'd probably limit college towns being great to big conference schools. It's hard to describe but it was awesome and awful at the same time.

Ok. Maybe he lived at home in going to depaul to not pay college room and board, thus making it cheaper by avoiding that expense. Bitches!!!! I always have answers. I don't want to continue this but you keep dragging me in. Point is I think he lied no matter the reason. Got it?

I like the idea of Lawrence commuting from the Dirty 180s to the Fullerton Red Line stop for four years and coming out the other end a hardened city boy.

Once again, I think Larry is a compulsive liar. A compulsive liar doesn't lie, necessarily, for any particular reason. It's out of habbit.

Compulsive Liar

A compulsive liar is defined as someone who lies out of habit. Lying is their normal and reflexive way of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything, large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable while lying feels right. Compulsive lying is usually thought to develop in early childhood, due to being placed in an environment where lying was necessary. For the most part, compulsive liars are not overly manipulative and cunning (unlike sociopaths), rather they simply lie out of habit - an automatic response which is hard to break and one that takes its toll on a relationship (see, how to cope with a compulsive liar).

You guys keep forgetting - full-ride club team baseball scholarship.

Also, drinking in bars at 19 could make Chambana rival Lincoln Park for a college kid.

Unfortunately, due to Peter Jackson's grandiosity, we won't be out of habbits until summer 2014 at the earliest.

Larry was trying to impress Bernstein by telling him that Illinois was an option. Maybe that was it. He feels small with his Depaul degree compared to Dan's Duke paper. He wants Dan to consider him his intellectual equal. Things like this matter to Larry. He wants Dan to think highly of him. I think all of you will at least agree with that.

If you guys say DePaul cost more than U of I, I guess I'll take your word. Though I have my doubts. I still think Illinois is more of a prestigious school than DePaul. I sure as hell know that our very own, Doc Ken, would agree with that.
