You aren't just dumping Cutler...you are probably dumping Marshall as well because he is going to be a piece of shit if you take his QB away.

Yea, then I think they would consider it. But like someone else just said, you then have to trade Marshall. You're then entirely starting over.

I think it's more likely the next coach will want him, but not saying that's 100% given.

All good points but remember Cutler was here when Emery was hired so Emery may not be sold on Cutler either. And they may be able to reload quickly with multiple high picks for Cutler and Marshall and if the coach they hire is on board with this, then they will quickly become a young team with young talent (which is Emery's strong point).

Then they bring in a journeyman QB to groom whatever young QB Emery has his eye on.

Just sayin'

You could have probably sent Cutler (with an extension negotiated in) and Marshall to the Jets for everything they had if they had kept their GM around but not likely now with a new guy coming in.

image macro joke aside, semantically speaking, what kind of a "coach" wouldn't want to apply their unique brand of genius to someone with the physical tools of a jay cutler? [josh mcdaniels victory lap image here]

i'm with everyone who says that a new coach would love to come in with cutler/marshall and this quality, yet aging, defense. it's a good starting point because short of bringing in a boy genius like mcdaniels who is so full of himself that he thinks he can win in the NFL with high school players due to his Charlie Weisian "tactical advantage", you figure most people would think "i can start at 10-6 and do some great things right away" knowing that if you win a super bowl here you're never paying for lunch in this town again.

Talk about mega trades, that would be one.

The reality is that if the Bears do roll with Cutler, they are going to have to shell out some big cash and that is not a given. Cutler is far from a clear solution despite his physical tools.

Obviously Emery is not afraid to roll the dice. He shit canned Lovie fast enough.

Very true.

In that scenario they keep Marinelli in all probability and they go for it for the next year or so.

Just spoke with former Bears QB Jim Miller on @csnchicago and he said the Bears have interest in both Nick Saban and Brian Kelly. Wow.

Maybe the local guys are saving their "scoops" for when the Bears actually hire somebody. Telling me who the Bears are considering interviewing doesn't impress me, sounds like Boers throwing names at a wall.

why not? that's what i would do... i would think that this defense, albeit aging, has some life left in it. even with an urlacher-who-wasn't-urlacher they gave up ~18ppg and were 2nd/3rd in points allowed, got their turnovers, and with another playmaker or two could definitely hold court while an improved offense did its thing.

the playcalling is what killed this team time and time again this year. for most of the season i could predict what they're going to do (save the non-fg vs seattle that woulda put them up 2 scores early) and if i'm just some pantsless cretin sitting on my fat ass at home drinking and eating chickenwings at 12:30pm on a sunday and *I* can figure it out, imagine what pete carroll and co were thinking... lol.

you can win with an upgraded version of this team. look at how many of us thought the bears would be pretty damn good this year when we knew they didn't have an offensive line and we even thought the defense was going to suck, let alone hearken back to the 05/06 epoch... the problem was that beyond the bears' offensive personnel issues was that, believe it or not, mike martz was simply a much better offensive playcaller than mike tice. there's no way around it. the only time this offensive playcalling was dynamic this year was one or two series versus dallas where tice must have gotten possessed by the ghost of mike martz and said "fuck it, i'm throwing this" and they did some sort of hurryup pass pass pass pass attack and holy shit it worked beautifully.... just like it did the times martz did it in the past.

when you combine the personnel disadvantages the bears offense/line had with the obvious playcalling that was straight out of "offensive playcalling for dummies" the offense was fucked, even with a franchise WR doing his thing out there masterfully. and i'm thankful that emery saw that as an untenable indictment against the lovie smith regime. he basically said that 10-6/early-playoff-outs are not good enough today.... bernstein should have wood.

I don't know how true that is. A new coach will want his guy in there eventually. Cutler may be there next year, but I would expect any new coach to get a Colin Kapernick type player for the future.

A new coach would be stupid to put all of his eggs in the Cutler basket. It hasn't worked out well for pretty much anyone who has coached him so far.

A valid scenario indeed. We shall see what Emery does (and thinks). Obviously going for it for the next year or two is probably what they do but we don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe they don't believe in Cutler mental skill set and they go in a different direction.

We shall see.

At least the Lovie Era is over.

Agreed. Cutler has not proven to be a big game QB and a new coach will either want him or will want him traded. It will be very interesting which way they go here.

The more that I read & hear about Mike McCoy the more I like him. I am officially driving the Mike McCoy bandwagon.
I also have the Chip Kelly bandwagon in the garage all gassed up & ready to go!

Well, I don't see where I said the HC would want him forever. Just that they would probably want him next year.

The NFL is an ass-covering league, and no head coach is going to want to sign on to go 1-15. It's the GM's job to make sure the head coach knows that when the idiots who start calling Buffone are saying "I KNEW THEY'D BE BAD BUT NOT THIS BAD COME ON SHOW SOME HEART" that the head coach won't catch any real heat inside the organization.

But we'll muddle through for the next three years with Jack Del Rio oh god we're hiring Jack Del Rio aren't we?

That's why whatever coach comes in will want it to be clear that the Bears are rebuilding. A 30 year old QB in his prime shortens the grace period more than drafting a plummeting Matt Barkley.

I can already here the "Lovie won more games than he lost and took us to a Super Bowl!" in the near future.

People will say that now, just like they always say "it's not that we lost, it's how we lost" ever every single loss. People have short memories.

The days of the long term rebuilding plans are over in the NFL. Teams are winning with rookie QB's like Luck, RGlll, & Wilson. Teams are running the read option and winning with it. Teams can turn things around in 1 year & I believe the Bears will do just that. I just hope that Emery is able to hire his first choice.
