From wikipedia...

The series, set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey, depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the Edwardian and post-Edwardian era — with the great events in history having an effect on their lives and on the British social hierarchy. Such events depicted throughout the series include news of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the first series; the outbreak of World War I, the Spanish influenza pandemic, and the Marconi scandal in the second series; and the Interwar period and the formation of the Irish Free State in the third series.

Downton Abbey has received critical acclaim from television critics and won numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries. It was recognised by Guinness World Records as the most critically acclaimed English-language television series of 2011, and became the international television series to receive the largest number of nominations in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, with twenty-seven in total.[2] It was the most watched television series on both ITV and PBS, and subsequently became the most successful British costume drama series since the 1981 television serial of Brideshead Revisited.[3] By the third season, it had become one of the most widely watched television shows in the world.[4]

Great first season. It's what a trashy soap would be if it was set in England at the turn of the twentieth century with the trashiness seemingly dialed back only because people are dressed in fancy costumes. It also happens to be hilarious.

Try to watch from an historical perspective of the cultural change in England that began with WWI.

I've been known to have the occassional sex with a woman and watch this show. I'll admit it is not as watchable now as it once was when I was gay.

Well, if you like sports, give Sunday Night Football a try sometime. Me, I can't usually watch myself because my girlfriend's a Downton Abbey fan which pretty much makes me a Downton Abbey fan. But I do love to watch a good football game. Mmm. You know what they call football in France? That's right! Le football Américain. Check out the big brain on dolphin!

I miss the first season...things seem contrived right now. :(

Anybody else been keeping up on this? I think there are only like 4-5 episodes left in the series.

Great show. The old dowager is one of the best characters in the history of tv.

Yeah, she has been pretty good. Queen of the one liners on that show for certain.

Yup. didn't wait for PBS to screen them. They're on a "tape delay" of several months.

Yeah so it looks like Lady Mary has finally met her match--I'd like to turn that devious little ho inside out. She's so mean to Lady Edith. And Anna went a little overboard with the botox. She is incapable of showing facial emotion despite crying to Bates at some point in every episode.

Aren't Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey like the exact same show? and not in the sense that ER and Scrubs both take place in a hospital?

I wish Barrow would push Bates down the stairs. It would be a bonus if he landed on top of Anna.

 The character that drives us crazy is that girl from the kitchen that kept whining about the farm for her father in law. I wanted her to get
thrown out on her ear.
