They hate college sports and don't watch them, they have zero credibility on this subject.

Should be a wonderful show filled with Terry being clueless and ignorant on all topics discussed with BernSTINE stealing other peoples thoughts/tweets and using them as his own super smart sports nuggets.

Pass.

I have run over to Walgreens to get some fresh batteries before today's show.

Stupid #NFL fans is a perfect description of how B&B come off when they talk college sports.

It's also time for the yearly "Bernstein should love the BCS" rant.

Bernstein should love the BCS. He often has complained about how he doesn't like how random playoffs can be. This mostly comes up with baseball, but also with football and college basketball. He uses it to pump up the NBA because the "best team" always wins and you don't get some upstart team that shocks the world. He uses it to hate on the NCAA basketball tournament and all those small little schools that shock the world and win a game or two and knock out "Real damn teams" which means they have a player on them who "dunks a lot" or "is in his NBA mock drafts and isn't named Meyers". The BCS is perfect for him. Pick the two best teams in the country, and let them play. No Cinderellas. No Southern North Carolina knocking out Kansas in round 1. No Butler at all. It's a perfect system. We all knew that Alabama was the class of college football. The BCS gives them the easiest path possible to win a championship.

Oh, but he'll celebrate how awesome the 9-7 Packers and the 9-7 Giants were when they won the Super Bowl. But if Butler had won it! COLLEGE SUCKS!

I am still trying to figure out how you rush two linemen and still leave Alabama receivers wide open. Also, was Teo starring at McCarron's girlfriend the whole game? How far did his draft star fall?

Conversely, it's worth noting that many of the same people who love March Madness for surprise berths, upsets, and random outcomes are the same people who get their panties in a twist when a mid-major cracks the lowest bowl of the year in the BCS rotation. Northern Iowa beats #1 Kansas in basketball and it's What Makes College Basketball Great. Hawaii or Northern Illinois makes the fourth or fifth BCS bowl but loses, and you didn't deserve to be there and you never deserved to be there and you never will deserve to be there and don't you ever be gittin' none them ideas 'bout comin' round these parts agin ya hear? *chunk-chunk*

I mean, he's right that college sports suck, but I don't get what he's trying to say. Saban runs a pro offense and wins with it, thus spread offenses are fraudulent? But he's the same guy who keeps saying, correctly, that defense doesn't matter and all that does matter is slinging the ball around, noting Belichick's transformation from defensive stalwart to overseer of a...spread offense.

And can we please have a moratorium on "big-boy" as an adjective? I mean, it's not as categorically icky as "I want a stud," but it's just...weird.

Add me to the list of people confused by his use of "big-boy football." If an NFL team had Alabama's run:pass ratio, Dan would titteringly refer to them as neanderthals.

This is fair and all as a criticism of Bernstein's crude and contradictory thoughts, but there's clearly a middle ground between upset-ridden variance fests and simply reducing the post-season to a single game on the basis of (highly problematic) numbers. I do think your point on Bernstein would be fairer here if there was anything close to a useful sample size in terms of the regular season as well, the lack of which precludes any conclusion at all about who the best teams are in college football anyway according to any numbers anyway.

I also agree with CH's point on the analogous contradictions coming from those praising March Madness and whining about small schools being let into BCS games.

The term big boy anything is gay, Dan uses way too much...also add finite and quantify to his overused list.

I'm looking forward to hear how he dances around Emery interviewing Mike Singletary - reportedly because the McCaskey's wanted to. I thought his boy Phil was in "total control" to hire whomever he wants?

You are wrong, and too reliant on Dan Bernstein for this. No one likes the surprise berths. Every year, ESPN runs a show which basically is "Let's call the committee stupid for not including team X and including team Y". ESPN always protects the brand programs. Complaining about VCU getting in over Syracuse(I think) is just like complaining about NIU getting in over Oklahoma.

They become a great story when they win. If NIU had won, they'd be the new Boise State and everyone would be talking about how awesome it was. They'd be laughing at how stupid the people were that said they didn't belong and how a small school was able to shock the world. Your comparison is off. People love when the small schools prove the experts wrong on the court or in many cases simply pull an upset that defies logic. They don't care when the small schools simply make the tournament.

Also, don't forget to remember that ESPN is now in the "Controversy to make controversy" business. No one would care if they said "NIU made a BCS bowl game. They qualified based on the rules". When they say "Oklahoma is the better team and deserves it" people notice.

This afternoon is must-listen radio. Was Dan wrong about Emery's genius? Wrong about Singletary's idiocy? Wrong about the McCaskeys NOT. RUNNING. THIS. TEAM.? Or will he find a way to be right about everything?

In a perfect world I'd agree with you, but I'm sure this just gets chalked up to Emery's open-mindedness and his desire to avoid making a rash decision, two more virtues of this wise GM. Even though he totally has had one or two names in mind for weeks and has a clear vision to how maximize the synergy in Halas Hall. Seriously guys.

There isn't a middle ground. Bernstein wants the best teams to win. The BCS is the best way to make sure that either the first or second best team wins. It's not perfect but it's a lot closer than pretty much any sport besides the NBA. Take a look at how many teams that have won it all with records between .500 and .650 in MLB, NFL, and the NHL. It is much more rare in the NBA, but that is because the NBA is basically a battle of stars so it carries over better.

It is virtually impossible for a team that is under .800 to play in the NCAA title game, and most of the time there are multiple 1 loss teams that don't get a shot.
ZephMarshack wrote:

I don't understand. Notre Dame ran the table and we know Alabama is clearly one of the best. At most, these were two of the top 3 teams as KSU just didn't compare. The BCS delivers one of the top 3 teams in the country as champion every single time. That should be euphoric for a person who dislikes how the best team can lose easily in the MLB playoffs.

I'm interested as well. I feel like the Bernstein I fell in love with would take a humorous right-turn and say 'well, looks like I was wrong!' and make a bunch of jokes about Singletary. With drops.

The new serious one will probably say that Emery is just doing this to gain favor with the meatballs who don't know the real story....who will call in and the show will (pretend to) wish they didn't call in.

He's just gaining more intelligence on his team. You know, this guy who works for the team and has previously worked for the team. Getting intelligence from a guy who pulls his pants down for dramatic effect. A guy like that, you just have to get him in the building and get his football information.

THE MCCASKEYS DO NOT. RUN. THIS TEAM!

When the Bears interview someone Dan doesn't like: pff, it's a courtesy interview
