Emery is going to lose credibility with the good candidates with this disorganized mess of a search.

From a comedy perspective, I think Josh Mcdaniels and Cutler would be the better pairing.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he's being thorough in his search for the next coach but he should be fired if he interviews another ST coach or USFL coach for the job. The Bears arguably have the best team that has a coaching vacancy. It appears that he started this process blind.

Judging by how many names keep being added to the list, I think it's fairly apparent that he intends to hire someone who is still coaching in the playoffs (most likely one of the OC), but is merely attempting to look busy in the meantime.

That could only possibly be true if he were looking to hire someone coaching the Packers/Seahawks/Ravens/Texans. He's gotten permission from every other team and I really wouldn't understand why he would want to interview anyone from the 4 teams above. You can look busy without interviewing 19 coaches in 1 week.

Stop interviewing so many people, you big idiot. Hire someone now. No, not that guy, do not hire that guy. You big idiot.

Why is this idiot only interviewing a few coaches? This guy is an idiot. Why did he hire this guy? Why did he not interview this coach? Idiot.

This singletary thing is disturbing, why waste your and his time if not a real candidate?

Either a. He is a real candidate and emeryis a moron.
B. Mccaskey is tossing names he thinks should be looked at.

I guess this means you're happy and satisfied with the hiring process. Also you don't have an opinion about the direction they should go. You'll just wait a few years to tell us what you thought. Thanks!

Emery is doing a great job. This is the best hiring process I've ever seen. He isn't leaving a stone unturned. Because of that we are guaranteed a HoF coaching hire. Can you say 5 SB's?

I have no problem with this process if it produces a good coach. Time will tell.

With Singletary, who says he isn't a good candidate for a job on the staff? Maybe he's interviewing for the head coaching job, but maybe he says some really good things and they decide to bring him on as an assistant or defensive back coach or something.

I fail to see how it would be good for the Bears or better for Emery if he made his hire already. This thread is chock full of lunacy and idiocy. I'd except nothing less from the meatball Bears fans.

I don't think the problem is the number of interviewees, but the number of interviewees that seem to be incompetent.

If he was interviewing Gruden, Cowher, and Saban we'd have something. A guy from the CFL and a guy who held down the 49ers isn't exactly the type of intel I think our GM needs.

You're right. Interviewing 3-4 ST coaches, a CFL guy, and Mike Singletary is definitely a productive use of time.

That's easy to say from sitting behind a keyboard. Nobody knows what he's gathering in these interviews.

Mike McCarthy was a QB coach then a coordinator before becoming a head coach. Gotta start somewhere.

He gets permission to interview people he may want for his coaching staff without having to worry about being shot down by those teams because they cannot say no to a HC interview.

Yeah, thats not uncommon. Singletary is a terrible coach, we know this, and the ST and CFL guys would be comical hires for a charter franchise that also has "the best team of any team with a coaching vacancy". It's getting pretty difficult to defend Emery beyond "well maybe shit will work out."

Bingo. The narrative of this hiring process is Emery is casting a wide net to gain intelligence. So why aren't three Super Bowl winning coaches in Gruden, Cowher or Billick in the conversation for an interview?

No report has indicated Emery had any serious consideration of Chip Kelly and Bears. So did Emery feel more offensive insight could be gleaned from the Dallas, Falcons or Vikings special teams coordinator?

Are defensive coordinators/assistants unable to show Emery how defenses shut down the Bears offense on a consistent basis?

The CFL guy prepped Cutler for the NFL Draft. I understand talking with him.

That's an interesting angle. Could Emery be using this as a way to get information on whether Cutler is the future or if he should simply be a one year solution with an eye towards a rookie for the future?

It'll be easy to defend or criticize him when he actually hires someone. Defending or criticizing the search, while it's what people on messageboards do, seems like something that people will immediately forget about when there's an actual hire. Here's some of the risk-adverse thinking you say the NFL avoids, although not Singletary, he obviously sucks.

He's not a CFL lifetime guy. He was on an NFL coaching staff from 1985 thru 2004. Why would talking to a guy who has 19 years of NFL coaching experience be "comical?"

You're just biased is all.

Trestman moved to the National Football League and coached the running backs with the Minnesota Vikings in 1985 and 1986. He became quarterbacks coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987 then held the same position with the Cleveland Browns in 1988. In Cleveland he again coached Kosar and the team finished 10–6 and made the playoffs. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1989. That year Kosar passed for 3,533 yards and 18 TDs, wide receiver Webster Slaughter had a franchise record 1,236 receiving yards, and the Browns made it to the AFC Championship game.

In 1990, Trestman returned to Minnesota as quarterbacks coach for the Vikings. He spent two years there and then left coaching for three years.

He returned to the NFL in 1995 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with San Francisco, where he served in that capacity through 1996. The first year he was there the 49ers led the NFL with 457 points scored, 644 pass attempts and 4,779 passing yards.

Trestman joined the Detroit Lions as quarterbacks coach in 1997. That year Lion's quarterback Scott Mitchell passed for 3,484 yards, second most in team history.

In 1998 he was with the Arizona Cardinals as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. That year quarterback Jake Plummer threw for 3,737 yards, and the Cardinals made the playoffs for the first time since 1982 and won their first post season game in 51 years.

He next went to the Oakland Raiders in 2001 as the quarterbacks coach. In 2002 he was promoted to offensive coordinator and the Raiders led the NFL in total offense with 389.8 yards per game and passing yards with 279.7 per game. Under Trestman's guidance, Raiders QB Rich Gannon won the 2002 NFL MVP award as the Raiders reached Super Bowl XXXVII, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Trestman spent the 2004 season with the Miami Dolphins before returning to the college ranks.

Yeah, Farve Fan. Real "comical" to talk to a guy who has had that much offensive success at the NFL level. What does it matter to you if they just talk to him?

Because no one in the NFL or college thought he was worthy enough to give a head coaching job to and for the last 10 years no one has thought he was worthy enough to hire as a coach. We aren't the Jacksonville Jaguars. We should be able to interview and hire better candidates. Emery trying to show everyone how smart he is doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

This.

All of this crap about the hiring process is just stupidity.

Let Emery do whatever he feels like he needs to do in order to make this hire. Interview anyone and everyone.

Then when he makes the hire, judge the hire after you have seen the results.

No one can adequately judge this process right now. And no one will be able to do it when the hire is made. Sure a lot of people will have opinions, but no one will really know. Maybe Trestman would end up being a really good coach. Maybe he would be a bust. A lot of people thought Singletary would make a good head coach and he flamed out. Maybe McCoy will be a good coach maybe he will be a bust. No one knows.

Emery may not be interviewing these people for the HC position. He could just be saying that so other teams cannot deny the interviews which they have a right to if they are being interviewed for a position other than HC.
