OK, so Dan is a dick/loser/douche for identifying himself as smarter than the meatball fans. Doesn't that make people who call Dan a pseudo intellectual a dick/loser/douche for saying Dan isn't smart? Really, you're then putting yourself above Dan. Doing exactly what Dan does.

Hey hey!!

Yeah, that makes sense.

I think we call hime a "sway-doe" intellectual because he comes off as one on the radio. Condescending, lecturing and brow beating everyone on all topics yet when he tries to talk about said topics himself he exposes his limited knowledge and understanding. Combine that with his peppering of "Big Words!" and other jargon that he doesn't fully grasp and you can see why we call him that.

I think this is true of every sports radio host. Nearly impossible to have a full, deep understanding of every sports topic. Having a basic understanding in order to lead a conversation is probably enough in most scenarios. Especially considering the listeners. He probably knows enough to carry the conversation for the vast majority of listeners. Not enough depth for some? Of course. But I'd rather listen to high level conversation that I can look in to further on my own time, than the same old shit every other show discusses ad nauseam.

Again, that's fine, but it comes down to how he treats the callers and how he portrays himself when he speaks to them and in general on the show. It also isn't about just having enough depth to do sports radio, it's how he uses the jargon, the "Big Words!" and his narratives to berate, condescend and portray himself as the "Intelligent Guy!" when he lectures and slams people, calls them dopes and ridicules them for not not knowing much when he himself doesn't know much. He fronts like he is the all knowing wizard and everyone else is stupid, that is a big part of why he gets all the flack.

Yeah, please tell me what's so high-level about "trust an authority figure to do the right thing," which is what this entire coach search discussion (presented by Buffalo Wild Wings) boils down to. "Don't ask any questions" actually represents the lowest possible level of conversation.

Dan is sort of like a heel in pro wrestling. It's mostly an act to rile up the fans.

I used to subscribe to this before I realized "I do my job with the least possible amount of effort and controversy so I can just enjoy my life and provide for my family" isn't really so much a character to play as it is a perfectly defensible, if slightly regrettable, approach to a job. Honestly, I'm more annoyed with myself for having unreasonable expectations of what a CBS talk show should be.

Is it Taibbi's Rolling Stone stuff? Help me out here.

Yep, and the NY Press book reviews. It's all there: the worship of billionaires, corporations, and neoliberal policy; the fetishization of "information" without knowing what to do with it, the holding dear of empty jargon, the metaphors both tortured and tortuous. How did I never see it before today? Oh lord.

This quote from Taibbi's review of The World Is Flat eerily prescient: "Things are true because you say they are. The only thing that matters is how sure you sound when you say it."

Oof. That hits the mark.

It hit me with

I stomped off, went through security, bought a Cinnabon, and glumly sat at the back of the B line, waiting to be herded on board so that I could hunt for space in the overhead bins.

Forget the Cinnabon. Name me a herd animal that hunts. Name me one.

Dan never allows his opinions to be challenged on the show. What's worse is his production staff purposely pick out the goofiest callers who disagree with him in order to make Dan look even more right.

But he doesn't, really. Like, maybe in terms of the traditional archetype of AM sports talk radio as populist free-for-all, he is, but Murph doesn't have a show anymore, and so with all the voices from all the outlets telling us how we need to put our trust and disposable income in our sports teams, he just slots right in. In fact, he's become worse, because while Zach Zaidman or Chris Rongey or [insert Comcast Sportsnet anchor here] may come on the air and say that the team is doing great and everything's fine and great seats are still available, they don't have the hours or the perch to build on that with "and if you disagree, not only are you stupid, but you might be racist, too."

Dan is a smart guy and has the skepticism and curiosity to be more than a breathless admirer of dissembling general managers and Jerry Reinsdorf and whoever else is big and powerful and involved with sports or business or the office buildings in Maryland that control drone missiles. We need him on our side more than they do.

One of Bernsies biggest problems is Boers. Terry has no interest in challenging Dan or disagreeing with him. Berns would benefit greatly by having a cohost like Rosey or Rozner who would debate with him rather than rolling over like Terry does. I listened yesterday for a bit & heard Terry start talking about how he thought that the trend in the NFL is teams are going to move towards drafting QB's like RGlll & Russell Wilson, & Berns interrupts & says that there is no trend towards that, & Boers completely reverses course & agrees with Dan that there is no trend. It's time for Terry to retire, which may happen soon.

I agree with that to some extent, but the other side of it is that there will occasionally be a side-splittingly hilarious moment that nearly causes one to pull over his car and without fail Terry is at the center of it.

But Scorehead is completely bereft of humor, so that doesn't really register with him.

yes, that is true, but why call them out for selecting callers? might as well say "the carefully wiped asses allows the room to not smell like feces". every show selects callers. just like they select advertising and content. its just part of the job to produce a show. not everyone is selected, they throw in random callers to make it seem fair and balanced, but the fact is what fox news does isnt far off from what they all do. notice what i did there. it was intentional and it sounds dumb but i dont feel like changing it.

the show is changing because bernstein is changing. its not about goff, matty or anyone. it could be called the bernstein and bernstein show, because thats what its been since cbs bought the score. terry wants nothing to do with corporate america, so he found a way to let bernstein run the show and still get paid in his underpants.

matty has been abused. that guy might have went to school to be a producer, but he now wants to host and he isnt bad at it... i would think at very least they would let him work normal hours if he has to keep producing. i suspect the broadcast industry isnt much different from others... not many good rankings to be other then host or manger and those spots arent easily let go of.

Yup. I agree. Terry still has the occasional ability to be absolutely hilarious, & as much as I rip on him, he still cracks me up...just not as much as he used to.

Terry's best days were when he was with Dan McNeil. They appeared to complement each other very well. his partnership with Bernstein has never really clicked with me. Bernstein tries too hard to be at times funny and at other times intelligent. He appears to struggle with wanting to be a personality. Hence the constant talk about food, his kid, 80's rap music, and Chicago culture. it just does not come across to me as being authentic. His experiences are minimal. Boers has been drained over the years and maybe needs to retire. At one time he was the funniest guy on the radio to me and his columns in the Sun Times were not bad either. The shtick about not liking sports yet you work at a sports station is getting old also.

It depends how close they sound to the guys from the Superfans sketch. He gets really annoyed when a guy with a CHEECAGO accent calls in. He doesn't seem to care when others do.
