For making me sad.

IF not for the injuries he could have been one of the best of his generation.

In his desk drawer Ricketts has a signed contract with Kerry Wood for a cemetery plot beneath the mound in Wrigley Field. This is where Kerry will be buried upon his death. Future Cub hurlers can set their rosin bags upon his tombstone.

If not for the lack of some combination of talent, drive, discipline, gender, pedigree, resources and luck any one of us could have been the best of our generation.

True but on one given day he might have been the best ever, not many can say that. No matter what you do.

They can put the towels there after the next "can't miss" prospect finishes his towel drills.

Not even close, unless the juice was beer.

He might be the pussiest hurler from Texas that has ever played pro ball.

Guessing you would not tell him that in person?

How many times did he go on the DL because of a blister?

Or I could just tell him when he's in the hot tub, and he can slip again.

The guy had talent, I'm not disputing that, but if you look up soft MLB players, Wood should be the poster child. I expect dudes from Texas to be hard asses.

Why not tell him that to his face? What's Kerry Wood gonna do? Snap a towel at Douchebag?

Chus beat me to it on the towel drill joke, dammit. Wood was a talented pitcher, but he also would not listen to anyone. Quite a few people warned that throwing style would hurt his career, and eventually, that's what happened.

Now, as far as a juicer? Doubtful. Prior? Probably.

One time at a game some moron Cardinals fan was yelling things implying him and Prior let's just say were very special to each other.

I told the idiot I knew the men and would gladly introduce him to them so he could tell them that. He declined.

Strictly speaking as a starter, was he even better than Jon Lieber or Mike Bielecki in their Cub careers?

Forgotten names from the recent past, but two pretty damn good pitchers.

Liebers most productive season came in 2001, when he posted a career-high 20 victories, was selected an All-Star, and finished 4th in the Cy Young Award vote. In the same year, he one-hit the Cincinnati Reds, 3-0, ending the team's NL-record streak of 208 games in a row without being shut out

Bielecki in 1989, he won a career high 18 games for the Cubs.

The guy was a china doll for a reason. Whether or not you like Steve Stone, he and a few others have indicated that coaches tried to help him with his release because he was throwing across his body and putting extra stress on the arm. He didn't listen. He will never be much more than a waste of talent to me.

But that's crazy. The reason he was so dominating was exactly because of the way he threw. If he had a different delivery we wouldn't even be talking about him.

He wasn't that good when he was healthy, besides that one game.

Yeah, but if he played as well as he did on May 6th, 1998 every other start of his career, he would have really been something.

He had 6 surgeries. Dont think being a pussy was the issue.

Guy could have retired years before he did.

I don't think its crazy. I'm sure pitchers make tweaks to their delivery in the off-season. The question is, if he did lose some action on his pitches and learned to mix up his pitches like a dominating pitcher does, would he have been able to pitch for longer and won more games? Secondary to this, he never really learned how to avoid that one inning of being shelled early on.

I don't know who this guy is, but its a comparison of Wood and Clemens.

Former big league catcher I think.

One of Wood's big problems was he was never really effective from the stretch. He often fell apart with runners on base. If you're saying he could have figured out a way to pitch without that devastating stuff and been dominant by thinking out there, well, who knows? It appears Peavy is making such a transition now. Other guys have done it. But the fact is Wood didn't. And rarely have we seen a guy just as brutally dominating as that young Kerry Wood was. Wood never displayed a capacity to pitch particularly well without his best stuff. He's really just like a lot of guys who got hurt and were never the same.

I think Wood was really spectacular at times. Other times he was seemingly just a guy. I wonder if the legend would be so big if he wasn't a Cub?
