It's a bargain for the city compared to the football stadiums in Indianapolis, Buffalo, and many other places. If the Sox needed a stadium right now, they'd get a significantly better deal than they have now.
http://deadspin.com/5971468/the-bills-blackmailed-new-york-taxpayers-into-covering-84-percent-of-stadium-renovations

I am literally going to be paying taxes that go to a stadium that would take me more than 6 hours to get to.

Using public money to pay for stadiums is one of the biggest scams going. I cannot believe how people actually support this shit.

How ironic would it be if Jay Cutler ended up on the Bills

At least he'd have to live in Buffalo.

No, he is. His evil spawned this trend.

I'd say Jerry's doing OK. And just because he's screwing the taxpayers a little less than other owners doesn't change the fact he's still screwing the taxpayers. Sweet gig if you know the right people.

A lot less, and it's most likely a net gain for the city, unlike Indianapolis and presumably New York.

The owner of the Colts, in a tax payer funded stadium, gets millions of dollars when they host the Final Four there! Buffalo is forcing some guy who lives in Queens to help fund a stadium that he'll never even be in the same zip code of.

I understand that Jerry still may be screwing the taxpayers, though I've never seen anyone explain how the US Cellular deal costs the city or state money(at best they probably break even and Jerry makes profit) but I would guess that the US Cellular Field would be considered a comparatively good deal when compared to the finances of others.

Yeah, just because Buffalo is screwing the taxpayers there more than taxpayers got jobbed in the deal the Sox got, doesn't make it acceptable.

Don't blame Mr. Reinsdorf. He didn't ok the deal. Blame Republican former Governor Jim Thompson.

Thank God Democratic Governors have halted the wasteful practice of publicly financing sports arenas.

Relatedly, using public money to pay for roads and bridges is the second biggest scam going.

I-Pass is the biggest scam and $100 every year for a license plate sticker is no. 2.

Of course it does. It's all relative. The White Sox deal does not look bad in todays market. In many ways, it's significantly better.

Outside of the initial $150 mill to build the park...which was fine...
then the additional $60 Mill in revenue from US Cell, which was not his money, it was the states, but he had the lease terms changed so he can get that money,
Then the $32 mill he got in the Soldier Field funding, because he got the Bears deal done
Then the $4 mill a year in additional funding The Sox get every year to do anything they want to, like Bacardi at the park, the T shirt place, new gates, etc.

All this funded through hotel tax revenue the city collects for this purpose, because we all know how money people fly in to see the Sox!

The point being is that a city revenue source, regardless of who it comes from is being used to constantly fund a baseball team. The constant and ongoing part is the main issue.

No, the revenues the Sox produce are nowhere near a breakeven or good deal for the city or state.

Maybe $20-$30 mill in revenue over 20+ years of operation.

When the city and state are paying for the Bacardi at the park and get NOTHING in the way of revenue form the place, then the morality of the deal should be questioned.

Are you saying that if the White Sox moved to Las Vegas next season that the city would have $2 million more?

I understand that the Sox have a good deal, but I just have a hard time believing that the Sox cost the city money. You'd think on sales tax alone that the city makes more than enough to justify it.

They should triple the tolls. Less traffic the better.

It is a lot easier to jack up the toll rates when you don't have to physically hand the money over at every toll.

Why are people so pissed about this park so many years later? At the time it was the beginning of standard sports extortion.

Answered your own question. The seed has not blossomed so nicely. "Public-private partnership," what shit.

Why hasn't it blossomed so nicely?

Has it cost the city money or made them money?

It seems to me, at the very worst, the city could make MORE money and Jerry could make less, but I have yet to see any case that the city would be in better shape if the White Sox didn't play there.

Sports teams don't create business, they just divert it. If people didn't spend money on the White Sox, they'd just spend it on something else. And there wouldn't be exorbitant hotel taxes that rot out the convention industry!
