So this comet approaching the sun in late 2013 might, if it survives the encounter with the sun, be the most spectacular comet that humankind has seen in 500 years. It could be bright enough that it is plainly visible during the broad daylight, and at night will be as bright as the moon potentially covering 30 degrees or better of sky.

Anyone heard of this or what now? This is really cool. The darkside telescope will be undergoing some minor repairs in preparation.

By which I assume you mean turning it from a bong back into a telescope?

IIRC, while the "galactic lumens" (I do not, obviously, recall the right nomenclature) of the object MIGHT be more than the moon:

Full moon: 12
Comet: 16
Sun: 23

..... one should keep in mind that it's unlikely to be a large object in the sky .... more like a really bright star to the naked eye.

Again, iirc.

Were you searching for the term "magnitude"? If so less is more.

You have to admit that my stupidity is often also very inventive.
