I am sure there are worse places in the city than Howard street, but as JORR stated , for the Northside it's a bad area. I wouldnt be scared to go there, but would be very aware of what I was doing and if I am was running low on my crack supply at home, so I could pick some up. Last time I was there, stopped to get gas and got offered a couple of items, by guys 'jus hangin aroun'

Anyway, his mom comes off the train and I see her going in her purse and handing cash to an old lady. Sometimes there's a fine line between liberal and idiotic. The best case is probably that there is going to be a line of people looking for your cash. The worst is you get a knife or a gun stuck in your ribs. Thankfully, neither happened to her. But the kid became agitated and began yelling, "Mom! Mom!, Come on!" I like to joke that even an eight year old from Andover, MA had enough sense to know how fucked up Howard Street is the first time he ever saw it and without anyone telling him when his mother who grew up right down the block was oblivious.

I dropped my own son off at a Green line L stop last summer with two of his buddies. I hung back just to be sure they'd be ok. Just then one of his buddies (a Detroit native  ) loudly asked: "I only have $20s, do any of you guys have change for a 20?" Right when the sharks started circling, I had to run into the station and start loud talking to every idiot (incl. my son's friends) in ear shot.

Didn't really realize (until then) how sheltered my son (but moreso his friends) really were. :alien:

Here's another funny one about these same two friends of mine.

So, the kid studies karate at a dojo in Lawrence, MA. And the place is in what most people would call a "bad" neighborhood. I'm not really up on my Boston suburbs, but I think Lawrence is pretty heavily Dominican.

One day, my friend is driving the kid to karate and traffic comes to a complete halt. She sees police everywhere and they are blocking the roads. She told me she had never seen so many cops at once. So her son says, "Maybe there was a murder." Well, my friend flips her liberal wig. She fires back at him, "Why would you say that? Would you assume there was a murder if we saw police in Andover? Maybe there is an accident." So she shamed the poor kid.

They were only a couple block away from the dojo, so she parked the car and got out and walked the kid to karate through the mayhem. When she got back home she went online to find out what had happened in Lawrence. Yeah, there had been a murder and the perpetrator was still at large and in the area when she and her son were walking to the dojo.

You have to get east of Ridge for it to get really dicey. I have a hard time viewing that stretch of Howard at Custer/Damen as being "bad" since I grew up right there. But yeah, east of Chicago/Clark on Howard is about as rugged as a neighborhood gets on the North side.

there is a cop key club two doors down from gullivers. There is always at least one car in the parking lot often a squad car while an officer "has lunch" inside (on all three shifts). That block is about as safe as Ft. Knox.

I still don't see that quote.

I'm not a member of the club but I've been to that club.

The Howard El area is still populated by its fair share of gang members and delinquents, but it's not as dangerous as it used to be. The North of Howard, neighborhood, on the other hand strikes me as a de facto combat zone. Street lights rarely seem to work around there, and gang members literally take over the streets on warm nights. Lots of fights, shootings, vandalism, etc.

Until about two or three years ago, the intersection of Morse and Glenwood was the site of the largest open-air drug market on the North Side, and the Latin Kings were trying to take over the area from the Gangsta Disciples. Crazy shit was happening all the time around there. Gunfights at 3 PM on a Tuesday. Strung out addicts taking dumps in the middle of the sidewalk. Winos throwing bottles around. Things have settled down around there recently, but a lot of the vestigial tension between the LKs and GDs seems to have been displaced onto the corner of Pratt and Ashland.

I love Herm's Palace. Great place, friendly owners. You can stop in after having been gone for six months and they'll still remember your order.

I've still got a beef with Herm's (no pun intended) that goes back to when I was 14 years old.

Space Invaders had just come out and I absolutely loved that game. They put one in Herm's Palace and I played it all the time. Of course, I became great at it. All it takes to master a video game is practice. But then something else happened. A kid was in there playing and I noticed that every time he hit a mystery ship, he was scoring the max amount, which I think was 300 points. I knew right away he couldn't be that lucky so I asked him about it. He explained to me that the value of the mystery ship was based on your shot count. You needed to hit the first one with your 21st shot and after that every 14th shot would yield the 300. All of a sudden I'm throwing up giant scores every time.

So Ricky Shane, the owner of Herm's decided to award a prize for excellence in Space Invaders and he hung a sign on the machine that if you scored at certain amount, they would give you a dollar. Now, not many people could hit the target amount. The problem for Ricky was, I could score far beyond that amount every single time. So I put my quarter in and played and went and asked for my dollar. He gave it to me. I was smart enough to know I couldn't abuse this or the "contest" would end rather quickly. So I would only win the dollar about once a day. But one day we were trying to buy some weed and I needed quick cash. So I called Ricky over to the machine about four times in a row and got my four bucks. He seemed puzzled like a huge water buffalo shaking his head. I did it one more time and instead of paying me he tore the sign off the machine. I said something like, "It's great that the contest is over, but I won that last one fair and square and you owe me the buck." He pretty much told me to go fuck myself. And thus began my 35 year boycott of Herm's Palace.

I couldn't help but think of this place in relation to this really good article about the Portland restaurant that had to close in part due to the attention it received from being ranked number 1 for best burgers in the country. I never went to Great Lakes while it was open, but the article kind of made me more sympathetic to the owners and how they had to deal with the worst kind of food tourists.

no, those great lakes guys were just straight up hipster douche fuckheads.

I'm sure they now own an avant garde coffee house somewhere where they treat any regular stiff who orders a cup of coffee black like he is an asshole
