do you know of any good, casual places to eat in Charleston. I'd like something that is particular to the city so keep your mildly funny Chilis and Applebees comments to yourself.

My parents were just there all last week. I will ask for a recommendation.

Any place that doesn't have a dirt floor would probably be okay.

In all honesty, those would probably be the best.

Per my parents recommendation... http://www.magnolias-blossom-cypress.co ... atID=20426

Place called Magnolias. Located in historic district and they said you could dress up or down, my dad wore jeans.

No it isn't. Dolphin was looking for a casual place with a local flare to it. My parents said people were
dressed anywhere from nice/business casual to jeans like they were wearing. Sounded like anything is
ok for this particular place.

edit --- just wanted to mention they went for lunch Dolphin so not sure if there is a greater expectation
for the dinner crowd. I wouldn't guess so.

I don't talk to my family about stuff like that. Just strangers from the internet.

If I may, I'd like to order for good dolphin so that he can report back to me.

I'll start with the Homemade Pimiento Cheese and your life partner can get the Fried Green Tomatoes so that I can try some of that as well.

The Blue Crab Bisque sounds interesting. I'll try a cup of that.

Can't pass on the Crispy Pork Belly while in the Carolinas. Bring one of those out after the soup.

Had the grits with the appetizer. So, I'll go with the Sweet Chili Rubbed Ahi Tuna with a side of sauteed spinach.

Finish up with the Rocky Road Bread Pudding.

Now, off you go and give me the report.

Quickly trying to imagine T-Bone's email/conversation.

Hi mom and dad. One of my close internet friends is interested in a casual place to eat in Charleston. He claims to be some sort of lawer. But there is some debate...he may be a she with a very dark complexion, if you get my meaning. Did you see any transvetites in jorts?

What say you?

Oh, and mom I appreciate you sending me the laxatives. Much better now.

That sounds like an excellent choice. If you ask me out for Valentine's Day I will let you order for me.

Ahi tuna is a solid choice here in Chicago or someplace landlocked but in Charleston yo can get an entree that was swimming in the Atlantic that morning. Order grouper or a catch of the day. This place was pretty good. Most everything is relatively casual there.

I hear it is oyster season, so I will probably eating some of them. I'll look for some low country boil somewhere. I'd like to find a sandwich shop around C of C.

We vacation often near Charleston, and this has consistently been the best place:

Thanks again for the advice. I saw Magnolias and said,"I heard that place is great, we should try it", figuring the opinion would be taken at face value and would be given proper consideration. Instead I was a met by "who did you hear that from?". I opted to go with "my mistress" rather than admitting it was "my sports chat website friend".

Here is the rundown:

Friday- Shep's Bar and Grill- I had she crab soup followed up with shrimp and grits served in a bacon and spicy sausage gravy. Great stuff

Saturday- Sticky Fingers BBQ- I had a combination brisket and pulled pork plate with Mac and Cheese and dirty rice sides. I enjoyed the brisket. The pork was OK. Mac and Cheese was excellent. Others had the ribs which were not very good. They didn't pull off the membrane fromt he bottom.

Sunday- Dixie Supply- it was recommended by the hotel for breakfast. It is a small store front next to a convenience store. You wouldn't even know they served food. Hot college serving up the food. Really good biscut, egg and bacon sandwich. I also tried some great biscuts and gravy. I liked the place even though I found out Guy Fieri had featured it on an episode.

Hymens for a late lunch- We went to the To Go section. I had a fantastic shrimp po boy. I really loved the shrimp. The sandwich roll was ok.

Overall, I'd give the dining in Charleston a B+. No bad meals. No amazing meals. There was a lot in the very good range.

T-Bone risked the revelation of his nerdy internet existence to his family to get you a recommendation and you can't even lie your way into a small plate of Crispy Pork Belly?

What a disappointment!

I really have had some great travels in the south. However, I have never gone down there and not found some overt racist clothes, signs etc. posted in broad daylight without any percetible rebuke. I saw an old man on the boat ride to Ft. Sumpter with a knock off sweatshirt from American Outfitters that read "Dixie Outfitters, Christian Knights" that had a big cross draped in a general lee flag.

gd - sorry I missed this, but if you(or anyone else) ever visit Charleston again, check out Jestine's. Very casual and the food was excellent. I went with the chicken and it was the best I've ever had.

Agreed that the overall dining options are very good. Every meal I had was above average at the very least.
