The funny thing is that professional sports are much closer to an actual slave trade. They just get paid more.

Professional athletes have:
1) Very little choice as to where they end up. Prospective players get told where to go.
2) The deals they sign are not really negotiated by them. They are negotiated by players associations before they are a member of that association.
3) NFL Combine
4) Unbreakable contracts exist in the pro leagues. If a player wants to switch teams, they are told no. In college, they are told they may have to sit out a year.
5) Trades. You are literally selling a person.

Now, obviously the pay is better in the pro leagues, but I don't think being underpaid was the problem with slavery.

Oh, and once again, let me point out that playing NCAA sports is completely voluntary, there are thousands of people who would be willing to take the "bad deal" they get, and that for 99% of NCAA Division 1 football and basketball players they receive FAR more in benefits than they generate for the school. To put it in a way that Bernstein can understand, the value above replacement athlete in terms of money is so small that only a small group of players generate enough value to cover the cost of the scholarship and then numerous other benefits.

Oh, and by the way, most of the players get paid under the table too that are worth more than the cost of a scholarship.
