I think it had something to do with Jesus telling others not to cast stones.

If I get Seacrest's gist, he's saying that such activity became unacceptable with the founding of the Catholic Church wherein the ethos of love articulated in the New Testament takes precedence over the uncompromising legal ethos of the Old Testament.

I thought that was how I explained it?

Did you? Sorry. I've only read the past few posts in this thread, so I might've missed something.

I don't think Jesus ever said that. He said that those without sin should cast the first stone.

Would it be acceptable for a 3 year old to stone to death an adulterer still?

No, since according to Catholic doctrine, humans enter the world in a state of sin (Original Sin).

Surely the implication is obvious to a man of your ubiquitous intelligence?

We reach one of the major catch-all's of religion. There really is no arguing that I was born with the burdens of the misdeeds of someone born thousands of years ago.

I can accept statements like that from others but as some famous dude once said "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".

I don't know if it's a "catch all," but the concept of original sin and the propagation of guilt certainly has functioned as an effective means of social control over the centuries. Incidentally, this idea played an important part in Louis Althusser's famous studies of the concept of ideology and ideological "interpellation" (subject formation) in the 1970s. Quite a philosophical tour de force there.

Numbers.

Better than Leviticus but still had some dragging moments. Tells the story of the 40 years of wandering after they left Egypt. Basically they could have made it there in a few years but a couple of morons on a scouting trip made up a bunch of stories about how they couldnt over take the people in Canaan. So the people got all pissy with Moses and God and started questioning why they left Egypt only to come die here in Canaan. God shows them what is up by saying 'OK, you want to play it this way. Now let's wait 40 years until all you whiners are dead and THEN I'll let you come back here.' THey moaned and complained the whole time too so God kept having to punish them... sending snakes and opening the ground so whole clans fell in....

The Israelites were really some ungrateful jerks though. How much proof of the Lord did they need before they would stop bitching. In today's world we have to go solely on faith. If the bible is to be believed 100% these people not only saw obvious miracles first hand, they ate the manna that the lord left them every day. Where did they think all of that was coming from. I dont blame the Lord for dealing harshly with them in this book.

And poor Moses.... Here is a guy that never signed on to be a leader but rather was thrown into the job by God and he has to listen to 600K people complaining nonstop for 40 years.

and he questions God just won little bitty time so God makes him die on a mountain where he can see but not get to their final destination...like showing porn to a man with no hands

Did you enjoy the part where this wonderful God told his people to go scorched earth on everyone already living in the land of milk and honey, including slaughtering every man, woman and child? Good guy, that God. You never hear about that genocide.

Yeah one lapse in judgment to a man who had nearly infinite patience and that was that.

Yeah, even the Israelites, who had been less than moral throughout, saved all the women but that wasnt good enough. Any woman who wasnt a virgin was to be killed and they divided up the virgins among themselves for slaves. This Old Testament God really is something else. I guess he chilled out once he became a father.

There's Christological significane, imho, in the story of those bitten by snakes and how they were cured/saved in relation to Christ on the Cross ... tl;dr version is look upon this sign and believe, and you will be saved.

Here endeth the lesson.

Moses got far more insight into who God was then the rest of the Israelites did.

These stories are absurd. It's not surprising that people who aren't believers think the way they do.

  Didn't think I would see this comparison. Hopefully Hank can keep up The Reads more effectively than I can handle the ZZ updates. It gets hard to repeat the same drivel day in and day out. That's a ZZ reference by the way.

Yes but Moses never asked for this. They even describe him as a meek individual. I think he did a pretty admirable job given the circumstances and his nature. God just seemed pretty quick to pull the trigger on him and Aaron.

that's actually a lewis black line. when he was talking about the old testament vs. new.

i liked exodus and the book of the daniel in the old testament, along with job. in my biblical and classical lit class, we also read some of the apocrypha and gnostic gospels as well. seek those out if you can.
