Double-dipping on "Hide and Seek" don't care great song

Remember when the mighty Edmonton Oilers won five Stanley Cups in seven years? The Oilers themselves don't: of their six promising young stars, only Sam Gagner and Jordan Eberle were alive prior to the Oilers' 1990 championship, and Eberle only by like a week. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov weren't even alive for the two Penguins championships that followed. I was merely alive but unaware of hockey for the '87, '88, '90 wins. The realization that you're watching people who are younger and more successful than you is a major turning point in the life of a sports fan, I feel. For me, it didn't really hit until top draft picks started being younger than my little sister.

Anyway, now that we're done ruminating on old age, the Blackhawks have to play the third of a three-in-four while the Oilers begin a road trip after a day off and a shootout win against the Coyotes. During the lockout, a bunch of Oilers players--most notably Eberle and rogue Ducks prospect Justin Schultz--went on assignment to Oklahoma City and tore the ever-loving shit out of the AHL. In regular-season NHL play, however, the Oilers have been struggling like a man in a straitjacket. They have dazzling speed, but no finish: at five-on-five, they have only 16 goals in 17 games and are being outscored at almost a 2-to-1 ratio (.53). That's astoundingly bad, especially from a team that was projected to fly up and down the ice winning and losing 7-6 like the Oilers of old. Instead, they routinely get shelled in the offensive end, then get undressed going back the other way, where they mostly rely on a resurgent Devan Dubnyk, whom I once described as "remarkably goaltender-like" but has been the only thing separating the Oilers from first-Capitals-season levels of badness. And that's really scary for an organization that drafted first overall three times in a row. Canadian TV rights are up for bids pretty soon, and when the Oilers matter (more than usual), the league can charge a lot to bring quality hockey programming to the folks up in the oilsands with money to burn. That helps everyone -- it's a common misconception that the Canadian and American broadcast deals are segregated. So even though we all want the win tonight, you've gotta want to see the Oil turn this thing around and be a league power again. Better them than Dale Tallon and his perpetually rebuilding shitshow in the Everglades, right?

Taylor Hall was out against Phoenix and will be out tonight with a suspension for a knee-on-knee hit that fucked Cal Clutterbuck up hard. Captain Shawn Horcoff has been day-to-day for weeks with a concussion from an unpunished post-whistle headshot by putative gentleman Shane Doan. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins must be battling an injury and not letting it on because he only has one goal on the year.

Numbers:
Hawks are 15-0-3 inflated, 13-0-5 in 65 minutes, 27.8 expected points (about 3 above)
Oilers are 7-7-3, 5-9-3 in 65 minutes, 13.89 expected points (less than a point below)
Hawks are 4th in goals scored at 3.111, BEST IN THE LEAGUE IN GOALS ALLOWED at ONE! POINT! ONE! SEVEN! EIGHT! GOALS PER GAME, it thus follows that they're also leading the league in differential at 1.333
Oilers are 27th in goals scored at 2.235, 16th in goals allowed at 2.647, 22nd in differential at -.412

Hey, I'm going to be business-trippin' in lovely South Florida from the 28th to the 9th, so I probably won't be able to do game threads! Someone else will have to pick song titles/lyrics tangentially related to opposing teams (the indier, the better!) and then do some basic scouting and arithmetic for the games with the Blues, Jackets, Wings, Wild, Avs, and Avs again. I TAKE PRIDE IN MY THREADS, so don't let me down.

Oh and those blowouts to the Oilers last year never happened, don't even think about them.

Will happily volunteer to pick up the thread starting mantle. Lyrics that most people don't know will be included.

There is no basis in actual hockey, body of work, stats etc to support this, but just feel like the win streak ends tonight. Combination of the youthful legs of the Oilers, more rest, tired Hawks, getting into the grind of the season, random nature of the NHL.

It is weird seeing pro athletes that are younger than you but at least you get to say things like "These kids can play".

Anyways, I've watched a good amount of Oilers this season because I love torturing myself. They're....bad. 5 v 5 is a joke for these guys. One of their main issues even strength is their dmen. Besides Schultz, none of them can do anything with the puck. Their PP is different. They throw out their best 4 forwards with Schultz and magic happens for them.

Their future is bright but their present is bleak. Their forwards still need to develop. The one forward who's having a breakout year for them so far is Gagner. Mr 8 points in one night vs the Hawks last season. I wouldn't be surprised if this game has been circled on the calender in the Hawks locker room. Those ass whippings in Edmonton last season made them the butt of a lot of jokes. Even during the streak to start this season there are still smart asses who are quick to point out "But they've yet to play Edmonton and Gagner". As a fan, after the Canucks games, this has been the game I've been looking forward to the most. My inner meatball wants payback.

Third game in Four nights but no travel which is a big deal. Stay out of the box vs these guys and a team of the Hawks caliber should bury them....Please bury these bums.

This game and the next one (at StL) scare me. Hopefully last year's domination by the Oil was just that, last year. Need to stay out of the box and keep their PP off the ice. Hopefully we can keep our PP off the ice as well.

Speaking of the PP, still waiting for the so called coaching staff to wake up and make some OBVIOUS changes that I've been clamoring for for two years.

For one, stop changing the fucking players every 30 seconds. There's no reason a PP should have 3 line changes during the 2 minutes. That's insane and completely counterproductive. Every time a new line comes out they need to regroup. I venture to guess they lose at least 30 seconds of PP time just from line changes.

Second of all, keep Kane on the ice the entire 2 minutes and put him on his off wing side boards and run the PP through him. All the great PP players on the league play the full PP. Ovie, Crosby, Malkin, those guys never come off the ice during a PP. Kane is at that level in terms of PP creative ability. No reason he should be playing 45 seconds of a PP.

Third, change the entry and start using the entry that the Red Wings use. That entry involves the defenseman skating the puck almost to the blue line and then dropping it back to Datsyuk who the finds space and carries it over and gets it to a safe spot to set up the play. None of this pass it to a winger at the red line along the boards and have him try and skate it in through 2 defenders. None of this dump and chase which 8/10 times leads to a quick icing the other way. Instead have Keith or Leddy carry it through the neutral zone, bring it to the blue line, get the defense on its heels, and then drop it to Kane in the center of ice and let him find the hole and carry it over. When you've got a talent like Kane you need to use it.

His shooting % is 2.8. Nursing an injury is a probable part of that, but some pretty rough luck as well.

Goals per game, for-against ratio, and shooting percentage are not advanced metrics. Maybe they are for you. I leave the Corsi and Fenwick stuff to Behind the Net and The Committed Indian.

Don't waste a television on Stars/Preds. Just put on some static.

Ok. Give us something insightful please. Possibly a new interesting point about this game. Or do you just simply talk shit about the rest of our posts? When was your last interesting point here?

Top 5 in the league in points. Only two or three games so far this season he hasn't had a point. Sounds like he's quite the consistent force so far this season to me.

All you had to say is that I was right. Thank you, princess.

Now, the Hawks look a bit more awake here tonight and I'm glad to see the PPG but that giveaway by Keith and the soft rebound by Emery were pewey. Was Khabi this good with the Hawks?

He is invisible for large portions of games. He plays next to zero D, and he is too small to be physical. I love his highlight reel moves, but he is not even close to MVP level.

Well yea. Obviously he's not an MVP of the league.

However, he's been noticeable on the vast majority of his shifts so far this season. If you were going to argue this the past few seasons, I'd agree. Not this season though.

"Yeah, so you can realize how far down the totem pole you are."

Haha, Pat Foley going harder on the CFL than anyone on the Score had the courage to go.

I love seeing Frolik center to... nobody.

His aversion to scoring is something that makes him a good penalty killer I guess.

Kaner, while maybe not quite a league MVP this year, has FINALLY been living up to his potential this season. He has been playing much smarter, and he skating and handling the puck brilliantly so far. He actually also has been a bit better defensively, as well.

It has been said by many around him that he is focused and dedicated this season, and I believe it's not lip service this time around like it has been before. I am hoping he keeps it up and has a killer season.
