oh shit....there was a tire that went into the stands I think.

I just replayed it a few times and 1 of the tires definitely went into the stands. A few other pieces of debris. I didn't see medical personnel scrambling around though so idk...hopefully that tire hit that back wall and not the crowd.

One of the angles I saw it looked like a tire hit the start/finish stand. Maybe that kept it from causing more damage??? Hopefully. Very scary.

They showed the one tire by the engine but I was wondering where the other went. This is probably pretty bad.

Interesting that they still haven't shown a replay. They know something.

The tire goes right by the flag stand and then vanishes into the crowd.

I can't believe Larson's car.

How these guys never get injured is truly unbelievable.

I was just watching some replays of my dvr of the actual live wreck and hopefully just maybe that tire shredded and the crowd only got pelted with rubber instead of the rim. It didn't look like it was 1 solid tire but many pieces of rubber.

The announcers are talking like they know fans are hurt/dead, but they can't announce it.

Everyone knows there are fans hurt. Several reports of fans being taken out on backboards. Just no one knows the extent and whether or not any were killed.

Are they really practicing for the 500 right now or is speed showing a replay?

Just saw a pic on Twitter of the tire in the grandstands. Way up there by the boxes.

Maybe thats why I couldn't see it on the one angle because it got so high. Best case is that it hit the box then.

Speed/Fox sports has been showing some new footage. That tire looked bad. It was in 1 piece, had its rim and didn't hit the wall. It went right into the crowd. They are saying 4-5 people are injured....

Marty Smith -

@MartySmithESPN: I was just told by police if I didn't leave the grandstand area I'd be thrown in jail.

They all looked alive luckily. Bad cuts, maybe broken legs.

If a tire rolled up in there, I'm thinking you probably do have at least some concussions. Even after it goes through that fence, it has to be going 50-75 MPH. They better hope nothing major comes of this or there will be some pressure on the real Daytona start.

I think there's almost nothing you can do to avoid this stuff though other than put another ten foot gap between the fence and then create a brand new fence going up to the grandstand. 200 MPH is going to get through a lot of safety barriers.

Sounds like all but one are out of the woods and even they are stable but with a head injury of some sort that required surgery. Unbelievably lucky. How 150 lbs of tire/rim/brake/suspension goes into the seats and doesn't kill people is astounding.

UPDATE 9am Two fans previously listed in critical condition, including one child, have been upgraded Sunday morning after a horrific crash on the final lap of the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. Twenty-eight people suffered some sort of injury. Fourteen were treated at the track, and the others were taken to hospitals. Halifax Health spokesman Byron Cogdell said 12 people were brought in there, seven for treatment from the crash and five for heat exhaustion and other issues. Two of the seven had been in critical condition, including one with life-threatening injuries because of head trauma. But Codgell said Sunday morning that the patients were no longer listed in critical condition. Daytona Beach Police public information officer Jimmie Flynt said another six people were transported to Halifax Urgent Care in Port Orange for minor injuries, and one additional person was transported to Florida Memorial for minor injuries.

I like it, includes both the drivers and the teams, in giving them the best position for that last run.

Good idea.

In my opinion, NASCAR needs to get creative & do more if this in other races. NASCAR attendance is down, & the lousy quality of racing is part of the reason. I love going to local tracks like Grundy County, Rockford Speedway, & Madison International Speedway for the short heat races. It makes for exciting racing, which is something that is sorely lacking in NASCAR.
