really bad from the acting on up. This was obviously just a ploy to get evangelicals, who will watch anything judeo christian related and continue to support a station that shows such programming

Anyone watch the premiere of The Vikings last night? The preview I saw looked interesting. I DVR'ed it, but didn't have time to check it out.

Can you be a little more specific on what was bad? I have read some pretty positive comments about it this morning. I have it on DVR, but have not watched it yet.

I wanted to watch this too, and forgot it was on last night. I will try and remember for this week.

History Channel's 'The Bible' Blew It, Says Bible Scholar Dr. Joel M. Hoffman

NEW YORK, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The History Channel's miniseries "The Bible" distorts the Bible's original spirit, and does a disservice both to history and to the Bible, according to Bible scholar Dr. Joel M. Hoffman. The problem, he says, is that only some Bible stories were originally intended as history, while others, including most of Genesis, were meant to be fiction. "The Bible," the first episode of which aired Sunday night, wrongly "paints the Bible with a single brush," Hoffman claims. Hoffman's analysis and review appear in a Huffington Post piece entitled "The Bible Isn't The History You Think It Is."

Hoffman's point isn't that only some of the Bible's stories happened (though he writes that that's "almost certainly true"), but rather that the Bible itself portrays the stories differently, "only presenting some of them as having happened." He compares the case to a newspaper, with its news, opinion, analysis, comics, etc. "The news can be accurate," he writes, "even if the comics are not. The same is true for the different parts of the Bible."

Hoffman argues that "The Bible" miniseries is like a combination of "a newspaper's news with its comics."

Expanding on material published in his 2010 book about Bible translation, And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible's Original Meaning, Hoffman notes a three-fold division of the Old Testament into sections about the entire world (from Adam to Abraham's father Terah), the Israelites (from Abraham to Moses), and life in Jerusalem (from King David on).

According to Hoffman, the reasonable lifespans in the third section contrast with the multi-century lifespans in the first two. Those "wildly exaggerated ages ... suggest that the authors of the Old Testament intended only the third part as history" and that "some of the lifespans in the first two sections are [purposefully] so absurd as to defy literal interpretation."

"Sometimes 'believing the Bible,'" Hoffman summarizes, "means believing that a story in it didn't happen."

Dr. Joel M. Hoffman, a speaker, author, and Bible scholar, has lectured at universities on four continents and held faculty appointments at Brandeis University and Hebrew Union College. He is best known for his research on the Bible. He also writes fiction under the pen-name "J.M. Hoffman."

History Channel’s ‘The Bible': Week 1 ‘Beginnings’ (Photos)
March 4th, 2013 by Marie Anne St. Jean

Christians and history buffs have been waiting anxiously for “The Bible” on the History Channel, which can be viewed each Sunday evening until Easter. The first two-hour episode aired March 3, 2013 with “Beginnings”, which brought us through the first two books of the bible: Genesis and Exodus. During the premiere episode, we witnessed the story of Noah and the Great Flood through the time of Abraham, culminating with Moses leading his people to the Promised Land.

The special effects in “Beginnings” were impressive; the burning bush where God first appeared to Moses on Mount Sinai appeared as a huge fireball likely fed by some sort of gaseous substance rather than just a bush that was on fire as we might have pictured it in our minds. The parting of the Red Sea is always a crowd-pleaser in film, and “The Bible” was no exception.

Interestingly enough, the ten plagues that fell upon Egypt prior to the Exodus scene earned only a second or two of screen time, which was somewhat disappointing. Each of the plagues could have given special effects crews a chance to really showcase their talent, but each plague disappeared from the screen almost before it appeared – frogs leaping across a bed, someone closing a window and shutter against the oncoming locusts, boils on a man’s face. The last plague got more billing as it showed the Israelites draining blood from a lamb to mark their doorways so that the Angel of Death would pass over them when killing the firstborn child.

Overall, week one of “The Bible” was worth a look, and good enough to have me tune in for more.

New episodes of “The Bible” will air on the History Channel each Sunday evening from 8-10 p.m. through Easter Sunday, March 31.

That guy is flat out wrong. I really dislike anyone who claims to be a Bible scholar and then claims that the stories in it didn't happen. He's just going to pick and choose which stories from Genesis he believes did and didn't happen. There are genealogies throughout the Bible that trace the line of people from Adam to Christ and other people who the Bible treats as historical figures. Christ refers to the flood and people such as Abraham in historical context. It's really just these so-callled "Bible scholars" that try to make things such as the story of Adam and Eve out to be some kind of allegory.

Yeah, it was all kinds of terrible. I was able to stomach only 40 minutes or so, by which point reading about the Flying Spaghetti Monster seemed a less indulgent enterprise than watching that crap.

Yes, except for the fact that the Flood occurred and Noah and wife and 3 sons and their wives were the only ones on the boat. So people generally trace ancestry from Noah.

I believe the geneology is from Jacob to David to Jesus.

flipped over to Amadeus which I have loved since I was young. This was one of the first "enrichment" type movies my parents took me to. I think they were uncomfortable with me remembering the candy called Nipples of Venus.

Complete overracting... the kind you sometimes see when an unskilled thespian plays Shakespeare

The stories were flat and uninteresting. Obviously you have to write quite a bit of dialogue in order for a few chapters from the book to equal 2 hours of time. The writing really didn't explore anything about the characters resulting in the characters being the same 2 dimensional beings you are left with in reading the bible.

I didn't think the CGS was anything great. There was nothing remarkable about the burning bush or the parted red sea.

Overall, it was just boring but I'm sure it was lapped up by some in the same way The Passion of the Christ was a decade ago.

I enjoyed it for what it was. Angry god and whatnot. Watching Saddam get nuked was fun.

It is what it is...I'm sure I will fall asleep watching the New Testament parts, because those stories bore the crap out of me anyway.

Mini Ditka,

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think you may need to go to one of those Special Christian Camps. It's for the greater good.

Also, if you were a Jehovah's Witness and appeared at my door, I would turn the hose on you.

My point is that you can't take the New Testament as having happened and pretend as though the Old Testament didn't happen. Both parts rely on one another.

I do believe it to be true, but certainly some things are not meant to be taken and applied to your life in a literal way. In Mark 9:47 Jesus said, "And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell." While I do think Jesus means going to hell with two eyes is worse than going to heaven with one eye, I don't think he means that you should be plucking your eye out if you have a problem with lust for example.

Pretty much. It takes about 3 pages though. And uses the word "begat" a lot.

Where did they come up with names when nobody ever had names before, except for 2 people? You'd think everybody would be stuck named Adam the XXXVIIth and Eve the XXIVth.
