Just thought many of you would "enjoy" this very simple, easy to digest graph demonstrating U.S. Drug Control Spending Versus U.S. Drug Addiction Rate from 1970-2010.

I don't recall any of you folks saying anything positive about how we handle drugs in this country, which you should be commended for. If you happen to think otherwise, you're a fucking idiot; either way, please proceed to your previously mentioned graph. It's even animated, for your extended viewing pleasure.

The war on drugs is handled poorly but addiction rates aren't really a good barometer of success or failure. After all, it's possible without the war on drugs that addiction rates would be much higher than they are today.

I think it was Portugal that made all drugs legal? or some of the more popular ones and crime rate took a huge drop. Someone else can go look it up. Maybe it was Maywood?

I think the underlined part was his point.

My point is that the correlation between addiction rates and money spent on the war on drugs may not be indicative of the success of the program. I would be saying the same thing if the War on Drugs correlated with a lower amount of addiction.

The War on Drugs is flawed, but the idea of the War on Drugs is not.

To put it another way, if you made the same chart superimposed with violent crime in America you'd find that the War on Drugs was a huge success in lowering violent crime in America. Now did it? Probably not.

To put it another way, there are probably idiots that will get addicted to cocaine/crystal meth/heroin whether it's legal or illegal. That's why the numbers are likely pretty constant. It's just like how people get addicted to legal drugs.

Yes, it was Portugal. They legalized all drugs. Instead of locking up addicts, they get the rehab that they need. Crime rates and addiction rates were down.

The point is it's impossible to tell if it had an effect on addiction. I can point out multiple addictive drugs/drug variants that have come out. It may be an accomplishment that with the widespread introduction of crack and crystal meth and other drugs that addiction rates have been stagnant. Even now, legal drugs are addicted to at a rate far too high for my liking.

Basically, the drug problem is much bigger than who gets reported as addicted. Therefore, using addiction vs. dollars spent(without factoring in inflation) may be a flawed metric or at least a metric that doesn't tell us enough. If we take this graph at face value, then the war on drugs has made a massive difference in violent crime since violent crime in the 80s and early 90s was significantly worse. I don't know if either is true.
