So two absolutely beautiful comets will be visible this year.
Next week, Comet PAN-STARRS will be making a close approach to the sun, and the comet nucleus and tail should be as bright as the stars of the big dipper. The brightest comet we've seen in close to 20 years. Check the Western Skies near the crescent moon on the 12th and 13th and track from there. Should be beautiful.

Comet ISON will be making a close approach in November. Early returns show that the tail could be as long as about 5-6 full moons and much brighter than most stars in the sky. May be the brightest, largest comet in over 500 years.

Pan Starrs might require a binocculars given that it's still twilightish when it shows in the western skies, but should be naked eye visible after sunset.
but ISON will be so bright it should be clearly visible during broad daylight.

Thanks, that should be cool. I don't remember looking at a comet since the last time Halley's was around
back in the mid 80s.

Thanks for the info., Darkside. I was just reading a little about it on a couple of websites after reading your post. Any suggestions for ideal viewing locations/times in the western or northwestern suburbs?

For Panstarrs get to high ground or where you might be able to see the horizon in the west right at sunset. Darker locations very much preferred but the comet should be as bright as the stars of the big dipper so seeing it shouldn't be a problem even in the city, but viewing thru the city lights might be a problem.

We'll have more updates on ISON later in the year. That's my way of saying I'm not sure yet.

In related news, here's a pretty cool picture of the International Space Station transitioning over the moon from the other day. It's a composite of two pictures, one with the station hovering between the Earth and the Moon and one from immediately after it passed out of the path of the moon...

I'm gonna bump this in November with any shots I manage to get. I usually go down to Bradley IL to view astrological phenomena as it is far enough from the urban light wash.
