The Cubs have multiple pitchers who pitched a lot last year. They have pitchers who will pitch a lot this year. There has to be concerns that pitchers who pitch a lot will get injured. I'll bump this thread when I'm proven right and pitchers get injured. I will not bump this thread until next year if I'm wrong.

Actually, the pitcher that logged the most innings in 2012 was Edwin Jackson, who didn't even pitch with them last season and he only threw 189 innings, which involved a reduction of 10 innings over his 2011 total. Samardzjia only threw 174 innings before they shut him down, so he should be fine. Garza has had plenty of issues in the past year and it's sure to result in the Cubs getting less in a deal than they otherwise would have gotten. But while injuries to guys like Sale and Peavy may be more predictable, an injury to any player (not just a pitcher) can happen at any time.

That is just the type of observation that needs to be shared with the sports radio listeners.

The point is, that while no player is immune to the possibility of injury, the Cubs did not expose their pitchers to a greatly increased risk of injury due to overuse. That cannot be said for the manner in which Sale and Peavy were abused by the Sox in the 2012 season.

Wait...
So anything over 180 innings is exposing a pitcher to a greatly increased risk of injury?

The issue is not just that Sale had 192 innings, that is not an unusually high total for a starting pitcher. It's that the total is 121 innings greater than the mere 71 he had pitched the previous season. It's not that Peavy threw 219 innings last year. But that he threw 219 after logging just 111 the year before and after having not thrown even 175 innings since 2007. Try to pay attention and keep up.....

So... what you're saying then is that pitching him 200 innings this year should be no additional risk of injury since last year he threw 190+?

If he were to stay healthy, increasing his innings by 8, would be nothing. But he's not gonna be able to go anywhere near that number because of the dramatically increased number of innings pitched last season (121 over the previous year) and the wear and tear it will have had on his arm.I'll be happy to say "I told you so" when it happens.

Ok, so what is your story here? You saying that a pitcher cannot throw more than what 20, 30 innings more than the previous year or something?
Was Ryan Dempster abused when he went from pitching 76, then 66 innings in 2006 and 2007 to the four consecutive seasons of 200 + innings he pitched in 2008 thru 2011 when he was an all star?

Do you even realize how full of shit you are?

Good example. Kind of like Chris Sale. I wonder how many guys made that kind of leap though.

So if he pitches 180 innings we can go ahead and tell you "I told you so" and you'd accept that and not be a story changing whiny twat about it?

Steve, was Jeff Samardzija "abused" by the Cubs last year?
Was he abused in 2011?
