Elton John is 100x better than Billy Joel, but he didn't write any of his songs so...

Personally I think Elton smokes Billy Joel and probably is equal to Petty. It's just so hard to listen to some of Elton's songs knowing that he's singing to his homo lover. Anyways, Elton John:

1. Tiny Dancer
2. Candle In The Wind
3. Your Song
4. Daniel
5. Bennie & The Jets
6. Crocodile Rock
7. Rocket Man
8. Island Girl
9. Little Jeannie
10. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues

Tim McGraw sanduskied tiny dancer to all hell. It will never be the same.

Almost Famous made Tiny Dancer one of the greatest songs of all time.

It sure did. One of the best movie scenes ever.

I guess I'm glad I never heard the McGraw version. No chance he could have bastardized it worse than Green Day did with Working Class Hero or Aerosmith did with Come Together though.

This was very difficult for me.

How could two guys list ten without getting what's easily his best song?

He could just list his fucking Top 10. I don't know what the big secret is.

JORR works in mysterious ways. The rest of us don't understand simply because we don't need to understand.

Well now that we got that settled, can you move on to critiquing Elton John or Tom Petty? I need to know what to like in the morning.

Fuck that. Grab a few fingers of your favorite poison and join the top 10 thread JORR

"And so it goes" needs to be in Joel's top-10 also.

You don't even have his best song in there.

I don't like much of Billy Joel, but "The Downeaster 'Alexa'" is a pretty cool song.

Chuck Klosterman wrote an essay on Billy Joel. It's the Klostermaniest thing he ever wrote, in which he posits that Billy Joel is great because he's not great.

The Downeaster 'Alexa'
Uptown Girl
Allentown
Movin' Out
Captain Jack
Piano Man
Pressure
And So It Goes

These are the only good Billy Joel songs to me. I can't make it to ten.

I like it because it sounds more like the Four Seasons than Billy Joel. Kinda like "Hungry Heart," which sounds more like them than the rest of the bilge on The River. (Yes, I know both songs sped up their vocals.)

For those that enjoy Billy Joel, particularly his older sound, check out the track called "Close to the Borderline" ... I don't know what album or all that off the top of my head, may be Glass Houses, I don't know, go ask the internet.

I know you won't be shocked, but I sing this when it comes on the radio. Billy Joel is an artist whose vocal range is doable by just about anyone who has even somewhat of an ear and can carry a tune.

Billy Joel made me a fan for life when I saw an interview with him where he was talking about growing up in New York. He said he and his friends went to the races a lot. And then he made it a point to say that he wasn't talking about thoroughbreds. Harness racing was the king in New York. Roosevelt and Yonkers!

Both very good. A few of my favorites from each would have to be:

Billy Joel -- Goodnight Saigon
Elton John -- Burn Down The Mission

What a great thread. Well done IMU. I cant make a top 10. I might have a hard time making a top 25. I celebrate his entire collection.
