The guy's card says he's a PGA pro, but not the best people person, for sure. Kid hit the Calloway, X hot maybe, I don't remember the model. He likes them right now. I thought they kinda have a bit of a cavity to the back, long irons have some soft layer behind the face to help with loft. I am encouraging him to just buy irons for now (4-PW, with a 3H). He has a Cleveland wedge and a Nike driver that is not too short, along with a new putter last summer, so make small changes rather than jump into a whole new set to frustrate himself all at once. Cash from last summer is burning a hole, and a new caddy position has stories of guys making $15K in a summer...

If golf now involves dodging sinkholes, then it is definitely a sport.

I had some things to do downtown in Kenosha today right on the lake and it was really cold out. I think maybe
I got a little too presumptuous. Started thinking about the Masters being on tv soon and had to start a thread.

Yeah it was brutally cold this morning when I rolled to the train station. But I am ready for golf season to start even though I am a complete and total duffer and will be ready for the golf season to end after my first 2 outings

I will for sure be playing in 2 1/2 weeks, it just won't be here. I am really looking forward to getting all of those bad shots out of the way. :D

You must be expecting a really short and early end to the season if that happens...

Bought a 3i and 4i Tour Edge Bazooka HT Max hybrid off of e-bay last night. The 3 was hit twice and the 4 is brand new. Can't wait to hit them. And I'm kind of a Tour Edge honk.

Been toying with the idea of adding a hybrid but really never hit one so I am on the fence. I find that my
long irons work really well chipping out of the trees and bushes.

t-bone, the best shot currently in my bag is the 7 wood punch out. I can't wait to try it with the 3 hybrid. Also looking to replace my 3 wood with a comparable hybrid. I've been playing Tight Lies woods for a loooong time and it's time for a change.

As I get better and better with my long irons, I have been using the hybrid less.

I hit the 1-iron and 3 wood almost the same distance so I could likely take one out and try to
find something I can hit a little less and consistently 220-235

Taylor Made used to sell those and labeled them "Spoons" or "Brassies" back in the late 80s.
If you can hit it well, that is going to be a weapon that will pay dividends especially on par 5s.

I've been hitting a strong 3 Tight Lie for quite a while. Also have a Strong 2 Tight Lie I'm not sure if I'm going to keep or not. It's awesome when you hit it but it's few and far between for me.

Any golfer with a handicap higher than 10 and not using a hybrid is doing themselves a HUGE disservice.

Ugie, what do you think about these sets that replace the 4 and 5 with hybrids? I just bought a set of Mizuno JPX 800 HDs and they come with 2 hybrids, but I had them taken out and replaced with 4 and 5 irons which I traditionally hit well. I already have a hybrid that I use to bridge the gap between the 4 iron and the 3 wood.

3 hybrids seems like overkill and maybe I can understand the 4, but replacing the 5 iron with a 5 hybrid seems kinda ridiculous since the 5 iron isn't exactly a tough club to hit.

I'm not quite a 10 handicap, but I hope to be right there after some hard work this summer.

I should get a hybrid or two. I suck and I never use a 1-3 iron basically. Recommendations?

That all matters on the needs of your game. Replacing the 4- and 5-irons with hybrids is becoming more common for senior and female players, but that's not to place a negative connotation on the clubs. Some players simply require more distance due to age, strength, or health limitations.

Long irons are hard clubs to hit for any player, especially amateurs who only play a few times a year. As I am sure you know, long irons are designed to "sweep" the ball off the turf as opposed to digging into the dirt like shorter irons. Some players simply cannot hit the golf ball with a sweeping motion. This is where hybrids help the most.

Bottom line: you have to be honest with yourself. If you currently hit your 4- and 5-irons well, then there is no reason to switch to a hybrid. However, if you are struggling with getting the ball airborne and with distance -- and you are unwilling to take lessons -- a hybrid club is a perfect fix.

(Note: As mentioned above, some players may feel embarrassed to carry multiple hybrid clubs in their bags. All I can say is that if the club helps you get the ball on the green, your enjoyment of the game will also increase. That is really all that matters.)

Should be required reading for all golfers, those 3 sentences.

Not only that, but it should help the pace of play, which should make EVERYBODY'S weekend round(s) more enjoyable.

ADAMS Golf has traditionally made the best hybrid clubs in the industry. It started with the ADAMS Tight-Lies fairway woods in the 90s and built up from there. Their new hybrid series for 2013 is rock-solid in all areas. They would be my #1 recommendation.

Unless your name is Ben Hogan, you should never touch a 1- or 2-iron.

Frank,

While I haven't been around much lately on the board, I wanted to get your thoughts on the "Tee-It Forward" campaign many courses are trying out.

Basically, golfers are required to use a set of tees recommended for their handicap index. No more "women's tees".

I'm not Frank and have not totally heard of this, but if the premise is what you are saying it is brilliant. If people would play where they are supposed and not worry about what tees they are playing they would have a much more enjoyable experience. It would have to help speed up play some also.
