MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Two men armed with a machine gun and a handgun opened fire in a bar on the outskirts of the Mexican tourist resort of Cancun on Thursday, killing six people and wounding five, the office of the state's attorney general said.

Cancun, a major tourist destination on Mexico's Caribbean coast, has largely escaped the drug-related violence that has racked Acapulco, a faded tourist hot spot on the Pacific coast.

Last month, six Spanish women were raped by hooded gunmen who forced their way into the Acapulco beach house the women had rented.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has vowed to reduce the violence that soared after his predecessor, Felipe Calderon, launched an assault on drug cartels.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since 2007.

Thats why I send Rick Bayless down there to bring Mexico back here instead of going myself.

Authorities in the Mexican resort city of Cancun say two gunmen burst into a bar in a working class neighborhood and fatally shot seven people. Four others are wounded.

Public Safety Secretary Jesus Aiza says most of the victims belonged to a taxi drivers union.
Aiza says the assailants arrived to "The Mermaid" bar in a poor area far from Cancun's hotel zone in two cars Thursday afternoon. He says two gunmen using automatic rifles went inside and began shooting.

Aiza says soldiers are guarding the hospital where the wounded are being treated.

He says police are still trying to determine a motive for the attack.

I'll guess these drivers were working on the side running drugs and did or said something they shouldn't have.

Nothing in cancun is far from anything else in cancun.

The whole place is like 20 miles long.

That said, been to Mexico about 40 times, haven't been in 5 years and no real interest to go to a major city in Mexico for many stories heard and seen.

Acapulco used to be a great vacation, but even back int he day the army roamed the streets with machine guns, guess that didnt stop the criminal element.

If you want that feeling you can go to Penn Station in NYC and get your fill of heavily-armed soldiers casually walking around doing their thing, even tho there's plainclothes cops with golf carts essentially doing the same thing. Nonetheless, that TGI Fridays in there has been a consistently good spot for me throughout the years as I've killed time between the LIRR and whatever I was doing that night. A personal favorite memory was watching a brilliant 38-35ish type shootout between Jay Cutler and the Broncos and Philip Rivers and the Chargers.

Penn Station was where I got my first glimpse of NYC, at 4:52am on a Monday morning after arriving on an Amtrak train that was approximately 16-18 hours late or something, so after taking a heaving dump with some homeless guys I ascend to the street level for a cigarette and see a cab with a LED screen saying PEYTON MANNING, COLTS, DEFEAT BEARS IN SUPER BOWL 41 so I let out a somewhat loud "FUCK YOU" and then out of nowhere, as if it was the voice of the city itself, I heard "HEY BUDDY FUCK YOU TOO" --- that's when I realized I was in NYC.

Vacationed for 5 days in Puerto Vallarta last March. Left the resort a few times, walked up and down the beach a few times. Never felt the least bit unsafe even for a second.

We went to Cabo San Lucas for our honeymoon in September of 2007, and we saw guys in uniforms with machine guns standing on the corner, when we went into town.

No,but I know Paul Revere & The Raiders call it home. Paul has been in a band since 1961. He still looks like he is in his 50's. Rock keeps you young!

Pretty sure my post following that says ACAPULCO?

Frank, you have got me again, proving your mental dominance over us mere mortals. Your level of sophistication can only be rivaled by your witty humor!

Right. You were talking about that place. I was talking about a city that I went to that is almost 600 miles away. But for dumbfuck reason, you quoted my post and felt the need to post a picture of a corpse.

Well done

If your overall point is that there are some dangerous spots in Mexico, Acapulco for example, I agree.

Frank v Bigfan is a once in a generation feud. I love watching it because neither participant lets up. Every single post is ready to be made fun of at all times. These guys just love to battle, and I for one am thankful for it.

I normally either laugh or scratch my head at bigfan's posts, but have not a clue as to why he chose to post that picture in response to what I said.

Well, we all know that you not having a clue is nothing new.

It was too easy.

I apologize.

Why? Does someone quote such TV shows in place of actual thoughts?

Don't be so critical RPB!

Would love to stay and see how RPB insults Frank next, but headed to the UC for some Big 10 Hoopla, low point first halves.

Branson sucks. Between the old people, country music, and severe lack of anything to do, I'll take my chances at getting shot at in Mexico.
