 @ JORR

If I had to do my top 10 pre-80, I'd go:

Queen
The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
David Bowie (I know, not a band, but can't not mention him.)
The Who
Jimi Hendrix
Eagles
The Doors

Since that's a 20 yr. period, my top 5 post-80 list will only include 80s-90s

Rage Against the Machine
Guns & Roses
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Stone Temple Pilots
Nirvana

Post 1980, I'd go:

Metallica
U2
Guns 'N Roses
R.E.M.

For me its the Beatles & then everyone else...but back in the day, when I was a musical snob, I hated the Beatles & my faves were:

1. Yes
2. Frank Zappa
3. Genesis, pre 1980...everything before "Duke".
4. King Crimson.

Some Girls is a great record. And I think that the more recent Stones simply suffer in comparison to their best work. For example, if Tattoo You were a My Morning Jacket record, it would be the best My Morning Jacket record.

Start Me Up might be the worst rock song ever written. When I hear it it almost makes me want to hate the part of their catalog that is actually good. It's that bad.

For me the Beatles really started it all and revolutionized the world. From the silly girl crazy yeah, yeah, yeah to the use of the studio and on. I will always rank them number one. In my opinion though because their music was a little gay and somewhat simple though a band gets a short deal and I would put the before the stones from the 60's bands and haven't seen them mentioned in the thread. The Beach Boys. Genius.

Well the cool thing about the Beatles is they "sold out" first and then they did whatever the fuck they wanted. The Beach Boys don't totally get a raw deal though. A lot of people fall all over themselves talking about how the Beatles would have never have made Sgt. Pepper's without The Beach Boys making "Pet Sounds." Of course they're probably not wrong, "Pet Sounds" was remarkable and God Only Knows is surely one of the best songs of all time. Their problem was Brian Wilson was nuts.

I can't believe you just said this. You of all people. You really sticking with this?

RPB is right - Radiohead and Wilco are almost inexplicably overrated (there are others). Wilco is a Chicago-thing, so I guess I get that around here, but the radiohead thing........

I'm not a guy that requires a great "singing voice" in order for me to love their product (see: Jack White), but Radiohead blows for other reasons: drum machines (that's a no-no), weird for the sake of being weird yet to the detriment of the music (see: Wayne Coyne).

To relate this to sports message board terms - Radiohead is "just a band". There really is nothing to their actual music that is especially distinguishable performance-wise. Yet Thom blessed us with a sideproject that sounds the same as a lot of Radiohead's stuff. So there's that.

BRick's question is great: who are the best bands/artists since 1980?

Sleater-Kinney was a game changer. They are in the discussion for me. I'd say Foo Fighters too. The rest of the discussion is interesting. I'd have to think about the rest of the list in my opinion......

I was a huge prog and fusion fan, and a big Camel fan...not a big ELP fan though.

There is no way that Foo Fighters makes a Top 5 list post 1980. I'm a fan of theirs and I don't even think they could crack a top 25.

Radiohead = Just another band
foo fighters = game changing band

Ok

Thought you knew music? This is like saying Russel Westbrook is a guy, and Steve Blake is a game changer. Goddamn.

I thought you knew how to read?

Did I say Foo Fighters was a game changer? Or did I say S-K was?

 spanky is drunker than I am.

You said S-K is a game changer and implied they were top 5 since '80. You then said Foo Fighters were too. Whatever you meant by that, I find funny, considering your dismissive attitude towards Radiohead. To put this in sports terms, Yorke has forgotten more about music than Grohl will ever know.

My statement was "S-K was a game changer".

And then......(no and then)

'They are in the discussion for me, I'd say Foo Fighters too.'

Meaning the Foo Fighters are in the discussion for this list IMO as well. "Game changer" only applied to S-K. You jumped on something that wasn't there.

Yes. I'm drunk. And yes, Radiohead is mind-numbingly over-rated by most people in our generation. Both. You and me and Thom York. :drunken:

Aren't you an English teacher or something? The way your post reads, you either stated or implied that Foo Fighters was a top 5 band post-1980. Forget the game changer shit because it doesn't apply. That was my only point. I'm fairly confident every single person who reads this will agree with me when I say you stated Foo Fighters was a top 5 band post 1980 for you, along with S-K. Which is fine. Like I said, own it. I was just surprised that a music buff such as yourself would select FF over Radiohead. Makes no sense to me.

Except you specifically said that I said:

I did not. That was the whole point of your post to me and my post to you.

I submit that you are, indeed, more drunk than I am. :drunken:

That being said, (like I originally said) Foo Fighters is in the discussion for a top-5 band post-1980.

I own that.

To me, Foo Fighters are just an okay band. At times they almost seem like they could be called "Generic Rock Band". Dave Grohl is a great promoter and a genial guy. If not for that, I think Foo Fighters would be far more low profile than they are.

Nirvana is definitely one of the most important post-'80 bands. Whether you like them or not, circumstances were such that they achieved greatness in a short time. Kurt Cobain was a rock star. Dave Grohl is a guy playing a rock star.

Thank you. I know we'll disagree on a lot of stuff in this thread, but this is dead on. Foo Fighters is the soft-serve vanilla frozen yogurt of rock.

Now, to explain to Spanky why Radiohead doesn't suck!
