Gents,

I have finally got off my lazy ass and procured my fathers record player from my moms basement. It's in good shape with some newer parts, comes with an old-school good condition Onkyo receiver and 2 nice big speakers. So....I have some crates of records (some good shit) and I want some more.

The questions I pose is this:

-Where are the good stores in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs?
-Anyone know of any good online stores to purchase from?
-Places to buy replacement parts and the like?

I've done some internet searching (!) but I would rather defer to the Council of the Music Mystics that dwell within these walls.

Thanks in advance.

Laurie's Planet of Sound, 4600 block of Lincoln. Just, whatever you do, do not bring in any 10,000 Maniacs CD's for trade in or you will be unceremoniously flung into traffic.

My turntable has long since bit the dust. I have a box full of old LPs in the basement, most of which have only been played a few times. I would record them onto cassettes as soon as I got them. Many of them have only been played once. I haven't looked at them in years. I probably haven't heard an LP played in over twenty years.

I've found it easier to order vinyl online.

I've ordered through musicstack.com. Never had an issue with them and was always able to find what I wanted.

nah, it's really no big deal at all. I just found it odd that you had replied to seemingly everyone else. Hope that stuff helps you.

I'm a bigfan of Reckless in Chicago. They've got 3 locations throughout the city, and you can see what each store has in stock online. I think their prices are pretty decent overall.

I will make a point to visit these bastions of musical goodness....

Anyone know an actual brick and mortar place to find spare parts and other such old-school stuff?

Best Buy? Really? Cool.

Maybe one day I will package up my turntable and head up to your humble abode in the sky where we can listen to true lossless audio and turn our noses up at those 128kbps MP3 listening peasants.

We can share our FLAC.... :D
By the way, I've found through experimentation that 192-224 bit mp3s sound better to me than 320.

Is that with CD's that you've ripped onto your hard-drive? And what was the audio equipment setup?

Primarily mp3's I create of original material. I use my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) - Sonar 8.5. I'll be upgrading to Sonar X1 shortly.

If I rip a CD, which is extremely rare these day, it'll be 224 and I use Windows Media Player.

Ah, gotcha. Why do you feel that 192-224 sounds better than 320kbps?

not a big fan of Laurie's...not big enough and not a very big selection overall

as DB said, Reckless
Lakeview preferred, Wicker is OK, never been to Loop

Dusty Groove is great, and a great place to buy online as well....great shipping and prices are fair
Jazz Record Mart is great too

Well, it just does to me for newer music since most of it has been recorded well. 320 samples more of the audio and reshapes it more than 192, so it should sound better but, I'm just not hearing it via earbuds. On a good system, you'll probably pick up more of a difference.
Older stuff is probably best at 320 (pre-loudness wars).
