I too was never a big fan of Ice-T in terms of being a (gangsta) rapper. I definitely never got into the whole Body Count thing. I spose he had his moments in establishing himself, as I remember "Five in the Morning" being a pretty solid track (it's long since been held up as an example of the archetype of what became "gangsta rap."

Like with most rappers who got paid and/or ventured out into acting/other-massmedia-ventures, you'd probably do well to check out his first LP or two from back before he was a household name. Lots of rappers tend to lose their edge once they're validated with a lot of $$$, as whatever was in them that compelled them to up and snap with a sense of urgency (which is the word that kept coming to mind when I gave Nas' Illmatic a spin in the last week or two) is long gone, and even tho rap/hip-hop has that convention where a good % of songs are "I'M DOPE, I'M MADE, PAID, AND LAID AND OH BTW I COULD HAVE YOU KILLED AND NOT NECESSARILY EVEN HAVE TO DO IT MYSELF.... AND YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS" aka "the struggle" as aptly described by longtime rap aficionado e-moo17 ---- yeah, it's just like, I often don't care to hear multimillionaires doing their victory lap/s.... give me the stuff that they were doing when they were trying to get in a position to make those millions and you're more than likely gonna have some quality stuff.

The one glaring exception to this that comes to mind is good ol Redman, who after a decent/solid debut LP in "Whut? Thee Album" circa 91-92 turned around and absolutely upped his game when he dropped Dare iz a Darkside (94, also one of the top ~5-10 rap LPs of all time IMO), Muddy Waters (~96), Doc's Da Name 2000 (~98) and, to a lesser extent, Malpractice (~00). The cool thing about Redman LPs was that once you hit track 13 or thereabouts, he often ripped off ~6-8 tracks worth of str8up bumpers/slappers/snappers once you got to that home stretch. Dude is often forgotten/overlooked/underestimated/etc when you talk about the top ~10 rap lyricists of all time, IMH/CO (in my humble/correct opinion)

Also, I wanna point out that XM Backspin 46 <<<<<<<<<< Sirius Backspin 43. Backspin 43 fucking killed it back when I got my Sirius radio around the time that Stern went over. I used to keep a pen-n-notepad next to the radio in order to write down the rappers/tracks that were !!!; after a few months that yellow pad was stacked 3-4 pages deep, making murph's yellow pad look like an over-glorified post-it-note. Backspin 43 used to really kill in the middle of the night when the DJs would go for the deeper cuts, I mean, how the fuck else was I gonna come up on something like Jimmy Spicer's "The Adventure of Super Rhymes" on regular/testicle radio.

Backspin 46, which I've heard through an admittedly smaller sample size in my brother's car, seems to go more for the "popular" tracks throughout the ages, not to mention the more "obscure" stuff they play just isn't as good. No more Lady B in the place to be on backspin 43, and of course, no more Kurtis Blow show. RIP, seriously RIP cuz I'll always remember that the Kurtis Blow show is where I first heard both Redman's "Blow ya Mind" and Rakim's "Follow the Leader" --- both of which got me investigating the respective rappers, especially Redman cuz like, I always assumed Redman sucked at rap cuz he was popular for being a clown.... LITTLE DID I KNOW dot dot dot.......

But yeah, I spose Backspin 46 is better than not having any form of "Backspin" at all, even tho I'll always miss the vastly superior track selection back on Sirius Backspin 43 back in teh day when like, shit, I heard "Oochie Coochie" by MC Brains and was laughing my ass off at it so much that I used up the entire 45 mins of digital rewind to bump that one over and over and over again. The track was so awful that it was hilariously brilliant, that is, before I realized it's actually a goofy homosexual recruitment tool.

That's right, kids, you gotta PROMISE to give MC Brains the oochie coochie. Like the Marines before him, MC Brains doesn't accept applications; ONLY COMMITMENTS.

Redman or Ice-T?

To Sini's point, I agree that Redman is often overlooked lyrically but I think it's more due to his playful punchline style. Redman never made that deep, dark, plunging into the pain of my soul songs. That's what was missing from his repertoire. All his stuff is happy party stuff. I love Dare Iz and Muddy Waters, but I'm not always in the mood for the comedy.
