I know where you are coming from with this and yes he was far from a patron saint. But, I did love his speech at the ESPY's and if it inspires one person with cancer or any other illness to continue the fight, then I can appreciate the guy some.
Despite the teachings of Dan Bernstein, I still share in the apparently sappy mentality that people can still draw inspiration in the feats/fights of others. I'm sure he gave one helluva speech, but I couldn't watch it then and won't watch it now. I certainly am not a grave dancer and don't wish ill upon anyone in my advancing age (except a select umpire here and there

It was one thing for Valvano and his best buddy Vitale to not tread upon any issue closely relating to his past issues over the many rehab years he was on the network. The tendency for someone as self serving as any D1 coach as dirty as Valvano is understandable. Sad, but understandable. But, ESPN wouldn't have lost me as a fan if they didn't do such a complete whitewash job of Valvano's past while so piously roasting any player, coach or program they felt dirty(or not profitable to them), at least where it didn't negatively affect the Mouse party/money line.
