I'll start by saying that this was not a popular show, it was on for years and the only reason I knew about it was because Patton Oswalt would tweet about it occasionally and because the AV Club had a huge boner for it as well.

Got around to watching it for the first time yesterday and binged through the entire first season in a day. I'll say that this is really the only way to watch this show because the pacing is a bit slow and the story fits together better if you don't wait a week in between viewings.

If you have the time (or an HBOgo account) I'd say it's well worth your time. If you can get past the existential turmoil that comes from extended viewing of this show I think you'll find one of the finest half hour television shows of this as yet early decade. I think during the show's run it was billed as a dark comedy/drama and it is to an extent, though it is incredibly dry, dark and is only apparent a couple of times per episode. What really gets to me is how honestly the characters are portrayed and how much respect the show gives them. It's hard for me to explain but it feels like the truest portrait of what it's like to feel alone and helpless in modern society, but has enough optimism to not devolve completely into misery porn.

it was created by mike white, who is a great dark comedy writer. he wrote "the good girl", episodes of "freaks & geeks", "chuck & buck", and also wrote "school of rock". he usually is in the stuff he writes...and he played tyler in this show.
