Well, this situation is fucking stupid. Everyone knows the best answer is for Cubs to stay in Wrigley. But all the parties are either acting like assbags or incompetent. I've gotten to the point where I don't really fucking care where they play. Just win a World Series.

So, I'm gonna go with the 39 year old.

I don't think that's the case. The "Wrigley Experience" is 24 year old guys and girls. It's the bleachers. A guy like Scorehead may think a seat behind the plate is the best in the house, but he can't get off his couch to get to a game. Hell, he doesn't even go when it's free.

And I'm not sure what 24 year old wants to move to Rosemont to be next to some fucking stadium. I guarantee you this: if the Cubs ever leave the city, you'll see the Sox get a lot more popular.

That's so shortsighted. The Bleachers hold less than a 5th of the crowd...and I've gone to more Cubs games in my 30s than I ever did in my 20s.

If you build it they will come.

Why are you so sure they will come? Do you really think the Cub brand is that strong? I don't believe it is and my evidence is a hundred years when they were no more popular than the White Sox. McDonough came in and sold Harry and beer and the ballpark and the neighborhood including the rooftops. Because he didn't have a team to sell. It worked great, but I think things could revert to the way they were for most of baseball history fairly easily. Especially if the abandoned the city and left it to the other team.

And I go to more games now than I did in my 20s too, but I don't think that's the norm.

Who the fuck cares? Sox for years have ragged Cubs fans for bragging about winning the popularity contest while the Sox won games, division and a World Series.

I don't care if only 25k-30k is the new average. If Cubs can get a new stadium with modern amenities allowing night games, modern batting cages, state-of-art training rooms etc. I'll take it.

I see your side of things, but you go pretty far in the "Wrigley is special" thing, too.

What is the assholish behavior you speak of?

I'm one of those Cub fans who don't frequent the park but I do go to the Kane County games here and there. If I am going to see a minor league team,I want to pay minor league prices.

You'll take it, but it would be a disaster for the Ricketts family. This isn't about the convenience of a few dopes from Schaumburg who will now go to two games a year instead of one because parking is easier.

Well, that and the renown legend that Cubs' bullpen call-ups make excellent coke mules.

Yeah it is; just ask those two dopes from Schaumburg.

How do so many other baseball teams succeed without a massive amount of people who live within walking distance of the stadium?

Some of them win every once in a while.

I think a lot of people are failing to look at another angle. Yes there will be the loss of some fans that are simply in love with the stadium area. There will also be loss of the big walk up local or bar goers that get to the game. Some other losses to be sure.

In a metro area of 8-10 million though and the financial advantage of some suburbs there are likely tons of fans that will go and also buy season tickets that simply refused to go before more than once a year. I think this is especially true of suburban families especially with kids that do not want to deal with the Wrigley area "experience" or that hate the present amenities. I can imagine a lot of soccer moms not wanting to deal with the giant toilet that Mac calls Wrigley.

I'm not sure any other team succeeds as well as the Cubs do right now.

I count 9 teams ahead of Cubs in attendance last year from a variety of backgrounds/situations.

Succes isn't simply measured by a single season's attendance, is it?

I don't think soccer moms are exactly the target demo for Cubs season tickets. Unless they are extreme masochists. In that case get me their numbers will ya?

My angle was that attendance translates to dollars and in this discussion the Cubs making money not in wrigleyville was my point.

I was thinking the soccer mom was stopping the rich suburban dad from buying a 4 pack of seasons for the family.

I became very confused this morning while listening to Grote and Haugh discuss the reasons the Cubs should abandon Wrigley. Grote wondered about the deal with Northwestern and how it would be affected since they had signed on to play games at an historic ballpark. Now why would anyone care about an historic ballpark when it's going to be so much better in Rosemont? Why wouldn't NU run as fast as they could to play their games in Replica Field at Giancana-Stephens/TD Ameritrade Park?

More confusion from Mike Esposito this morning. He thinks the Cubs should move to a "replica" Wrigley with better bathrooms, more skyboxes and more seats. (That wouldn't really be a replica, would it?)

Then he talked about the people that come to Wrigley in January and February. That shows that he realizes that the park is important, but somehow he ignores it when agitating for a move to Rosemont. Does anyone think people from Bakersfield and Okinawa are going to stand in the snow in front of some replica in Rosemont?

And the rooftops should tell the Cubs to fuck off. They aren't "stealing" the Cubs product. People go there to party. You can hardly see the game on the field anyway. Just keep the 17% and get Tunney to give them full bar licenses. But refuse to shut down Sheffield. Fuck that. I want to shut down Kedzie in front of my house every Saturday so I can sell beer and t-shirts.

By that logic JORR you're more saying the Cubs should tell the rooftop owners fuck off. If nobody is there to watch the game then there shouldn't be any gripes about signage, a JumboTron etc blocking the view.

What I'm saying is that the rooftops do more for the Cubs (providing as much a part of the vaunted "Wrigley atmosphere" as the ugly green scoreboard or the ivy) than the Cubs do for the rooftops. You could fill those rooftops on a nice summer day regardless of whether you blocked them with hideous signage. I think the Cubs are overvaluing the losing baseball the roofs look down on.

How can it be that Wrigley is this magical place, the first place that out of town visitors want to go before stuffing themselves on overpriced food courtesy of Phil Stefani or Grant DePorter at Navy Pier, and yet, that amazing place has no bearing at all on the monetary success of the Cubs? In fact, many would have you believe it can be easily recreated elsewhere.

It's almost as if the Score issues some memo to everyone who gets an airshift and then they're all too dumb to say anything intelligent about it.

No. Nearly every media guy as well as nearly every Cubs fan I know realizes that both the Cubs & Cubs fans would be better off if the Cubs tell the City of Chicago & Tom Tunney to fuck off, & they move to the suburbs.
You & Jorr must feel awful lonely...

Way to not address what either of us have said about their stance being fundamentally hypocritical and as poorly articulated as it is ill-conceived.

Sorry that I don't worship Tom Ricketts's bookkeeping.

Do you really think if Ricketts was so sure he would make piles of more money in Rosemont, he would hesitate for even a split second to go there?

And I don't know if "Cubs fans" would be "better off". You might feel like you'd be better off. But thank God for Tom Ricketts' bottom line that you don't represent Cub fans. Because he'd be bankrupt since you don't attend games.

I think Ricketts bought up a couple buildings already (the McDonalds as welas one of the rooftop buildings) as he began executing a plan to build the hotel he planned for and he is far enough along in his plan that he doesn't want to just scrap everything and move to the burbs. There are uncertainties that go along with that move. Whereas I think remaining in Wrigleyville offers much more certainty in his eyes of financial success. Personally, I think he's wrong. The financial benefits of lower taxes (14 million a year) he would realize by moving to Rosemont, as well as additional signage money and money from parking revenue, would mean anywhere from 40-70 million dollars of additional profit. Staying in Wrigley may a decision made with his heart, rather than his head.
