The topic has been broached before about living together before marriage. Intuitively, it makes sense to me. I believe BRick was the one who posted at the time that although it seems counterintuitive, living together before marriage will actually lower the probability of a successful marriage. I don't remember what source he cited, but he seemed to know what he was talking about. My apologies if I am misremembering and it was someone other than Rick.

It was me. That's what I was taught in college. However, looking into it more I'm wondering if the thinking has changed in the 10 years since then.

The rationale is still the same, but it seems possible it simply doesn't matter. I still really don't see how it could help because it makes it harder to breakup while you are still in the dating phase. From what I remember, that was the primary belief. Those who live together are more likely to get married regardless of if they should or not because of how much harder it is to breakup and move out.

Data still the same. Live together before hand leads to divorce more often...however it's correlational and there may be few other factors involved. My little bit of advice on the marriage thing: no kids for the first two years at least, four years if you can. It's hard enough to get used to living with/being married to someone new. Bring a third person, who is rather needy and stress inducing into the situation, and it is even more challenging.

...and if you think the "engaged" people on facebook are annoying, wait until they are knocked up. Facebook will become unbearable. I have a friend who had his first kid four months ago and you would think he was the first person in the history of the world to have a child.

I know I post about my kids on FB from time to time, after all it's a great way for their aunts/uncles/grandparents to get the see the kids who live 600 miles away, but I try not to do it everyday.

Yay. Another man with the balls to actually speak the truth. If you have kids right away, of course you will think marriage sucks. In actuality, having an infant in the house sucks.

I'd like to wait 2 years, but because she is a couple years older than me we'll probably wait 1 year.

My wife and I dated for 14 years before we got married, I suggest doing that to be sure it's the right one.

Abstract
Recent evidence linking premarital cohabitation to high rates of divorce poses a complex theoretical and empirical puzzle. We develop hypotheses predicting that premarital cohabitation is selective of those who are prone to divorce as well as hypotheses predicting that the experience of premarital cohabitation produces attitudes and values which increase the probability of divorce. Using multiwave panel data from a recent cohort of young men and women in the United States, we specify and test models of these predictions. The results are consistent with hypotheses suggesting that cohabitation is selective of men and women who are less committed to marriage and more approving of divorce. The results also are consistent with the conclusion that cohabiting experiences significantly increase young people’s acceptance of divorce.

Lived with DW 18 months before engagement.
Engaged slightly over 2 years.
Now 7 years of marriage.

I've heard that as well, Brick. But it seems to me that we worked out a lot of rough edges before the pressure of having a marriage as well as the cohabitation.

It's interesting though.

i knew that once we got near a religious holiday, i'd see some sparks fly on FB. i love having bad amateur comedians (like me!) on my FB list, i realize, just for occasions like this.

The Passover story is 100% false. Can we stop? All of this? Please?

Comments (poster's comments in blue):

Six thousand years and now it's gonna stop already, cuz some uppity comic figured it out for us. No. Next question.

The whole story *is* made up. Most Jews will not acknowledge that. And these aren't people's beliefs; these are things they were told to "believe." Big difference. And fuck people's beliefs anyway.

Everyone just needs to relax. We are 5 days away from celebrating the day that the Easter Bunny created Zombie Christ, whom we keep at bay by sacrificing Peeps (not Terry's) to an altar of fake grass and lamb cake.
