Breakups are hard. The Red Wings are breaking up with the Blackhawks after this year, ending their divisional rivalry so that they can play all their conference road games in the Eastern Time Zone. Starting next year, the Wings and Hawks will only play twice a year, one home, one away. In return, the Wings will see tons of games with the Ottawa Senators, and we will see as many with the Colorado Avalanche. Somehow, this has been judged to be for the best. I hate the Wings and yearn to see them lose every game, and those years when the Hawks were their doormat were tough, but it's undeniable that since 2007, Hawks-Wings has been hockey at its absolute best. Post-whistle tussling kept to a bare minimum, fights a rarity, speed and finesse up and down the ice, games that almost always go down to the wire. Chicago and Detroit, from the teams to the arenas, make the NHL look great -- just as much as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, or Boston. It's a shame, then, that something like a one-hour time difference is demoting the Hawks to the NHL's new negligible West, with 14 teams, most of whom you will never see on an NBC Sunday brunch game. And while I realize that competitively, it benefits the Hawks to play divisional schedules with shitshows like the Jets, Avs, and Stars, I can't help but feel kind of dumped coming into next year.

Now if the Coyotes finally move to Quebec City, it could kick the Wings right back to the West, in which case disregard!

Hossa and Sharp out again, Hossa to IR retroactively, Jeremy Morin up from Rockford. Here's hoping for the best.
