Good riddance. This was regarded as a god awful reach of a pick when it was made and it has proven to be just that. Michael Brenley and D-Train also got the axe today.

I also call a "re-do" on the draft pick.

Zach Lee, Nick Castellanos, and Mike Olt all could have been taken with that pick.

+1

It gets real depressing seeing the players they could have had at that slot.

Good riddance

I guess I'm not a good fan 'cause I don't know who this fella is.

Also, at the risk of further proving a lack of top fanship, wasn't Ben Christensen a 1st round pick? If so, at the loss of not knowing what this Simpson fella did (Simpson, eh?), I'd say he would be the worst.

I also just got up from a nap, so I could be extra-crispy stupid, too.

No, that would make you a smart fan DT.

He didn't do anything that would make someone take notice. This cannot be used as an affirmation of your stupidity.

It is one thing to miss on a high school guy but to draft a college guy in the 1st rd that can't make it out of A ball is as bad as it gets.

Brett Wallach was also released which closes the door on the shit pile trade Hendry pulled off for Lilly.

I'm totally going on a bad memory here. Wasn't Simpson a Wilken guy? I think Ricketts was blamed for making management draft someone on the cheap. I'm also pretty sure we all crapped on it.

Around 180. Correct. Horrible.

I heard it was Sam Zell who told Hendry to go cheap but Simpson wasn't even supposed to sniff the first round, so Hendry IMO takes the blame here. Ditto that Lilly trade which netted the Cubs nothing.

If memory holds, most teams had him as about a 5th round talent.
Not piling on, pitching prospects bust all the time.. the rate is much higher on guys overslotted for perhaps signablity reasons.

100% correct!

Simpson was undersized and wasnt on anyone elses top 100 list! Scouting services didnt even have a pic of him.

I know first round picks bust out sometimes ( josh v.) But in this kids case nobody had him as a first, second or 3rd!!

Wilken is still around !

1st rounders in the tim Wilken era:

2006- Tyler Colvin
2007- Josh Vitters
2008- Andrew Cashner
2009- Brett Jackson
2010- Hayden Simpson
2011- Javier Baez

Doesn't give you the warm and fuzzies for Baez.

I'm really surprised Wilken is still on the staff. Can't find it, but there was an interview he did in 2007 where he said that it takes about three years for a pick to mature into a major league player. While he certainly had some luck in Toronto, based on his own criteria, he has been a failure.

I'm never drinking wheat beer again. I thought about posting this in the Drinky Board thread, but it's more appropriate here. My farts smell like this draft pick. I can taste how bad it is.

Speaking of massive draft busts -- is Dillon Maples ever going to throw a pitch in a real game? WTF is wrong with that guy?
