the fundamental problem with this "article" (in the spirit of "bleacher report" i reckon) is that the greatest rapper alive doesn't change every year.

when i really wanna milk a cheap laugh i call tupac the greatest rapper alive. and i'm not even lying.

2000 should have been Ghostface. Nothing was better than Supreme Clientele that year.

Chas, they wrote this about Public Enemy

1988 was Public Enemy's year. There is no way around it. It Takes A Nation Of Millions exploded louder than a bomb and changed the direction of rap for at least three full years after its release. But it wasn't all about Chuck D. It was about the idea. It was about the group. It was about the message. It was about the noise. And yes, Chuck brought all of the above. Chuck has one of the greatest voices in rap history. But still, despite all of the accolades you can give him during that period, he just wasn't the top lyricist.

Sounds about right.

not to mention The Roots, Pharcyde, EPMD, Black Sheep, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Blackstar - no Mos Def or Talib Kweli or Pharorahe Monch on there either? Rawkus did have a golden era itself around 2000....

but yet they listed Treach like 3 times ??? I like the 1st Naughty By Nature album and he was an OK rapper but c'mon
and they did list Q-Tip and a few others that were in groups
