I have a cousin that I was really close to as a kid but haven't really seen that often or kept in touch with as an adult. Today I get a wedding invitation from him. The wedding is May 25th. I could be wrong but that really seems like short notice. On top of that the wedding is in Vancouver, WA. I'm really on the fence about going. Help me out.

Sounds like someone got a lot of 'Will Not Attend' replies and is frantically trying to fill out the hall they have already booked and paid for. 7 weeks isnt a lot of time to plan a trip like that... Especially since you have kids.

screw it, fly out solo on el cheapo airlines, bang the maid of honor and/or bride and/or mother-in-law and/or gramma-in-law and/or best man and/or groom--wait, no, you're related to the groom? that'd be beyond the limits of good taste.

pick up a date for the wedding at a local watering hole, tell your date to rip it up at the open bar and do the same.

you'll never have to deal with unwanted wedding invitations again.

I don't really think 6 weeks is that much notice.

Our daughter is getting married in June. She sent her invites out Tuesday this week. They did the save the date thing a year ago though.

Alternative, send him a reply via email that you can't make the wedding but that he should look you up once the divorce happens and you'll fly out and
do the rounds at PDX's infamous strip-club scene with him.

Our wedding is November 8th, and our save the dates went out late Feb/early March. But its also here so nobody has to travel more than about an hour by car.


Nas, show up, with your lady and all your kids, and give him $20 in a card.

That is short notice for a distant wedding. However, consider that as a guy, your cousin may not have been really engaged in the whole invitations thing & belatedly discovered his unfortunate omission. Alternatively, he obviously may just be trolling for gifts. Who knows.

In any event send a nice gift, a warm letter(politely noting you can't attend) and take the high road.

Why give a wedding gift simply because you were sent an invitation? If you're not going, you give no gift unless it's someone really close to you.

When I got married, a couple people who were invited that didn't go sent us money and I felt weird about cashing the check. If it wasn't for my wife talking me into cashing them, I would not have.
