The math suggests that the speed drops 5mph, for every foot less than six, for a shoulder width. That's the equation anyway...

During Construction season, notice that the lane width shrinks with placement of the concrete jersey barriers, and the posted speed drops? This isn't only to protect workers, it's to protect the drivers from smashing into stuff.
