There is no fucking way this is true

"Then she said, `We can't have you making fun of the priest scandal on your show,'" Bernstein recalled. "Her exact words were, `[DePaul officials] want to protect their brethren.'"

No one talks like that. And no one would say that in the midst of that scandal. That is straight up Bernstein fantasy

According to Bernstein, DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto asked him to refrain from making jokes on the issue and gave him a list of references he should avoid. Bernstein told DePaul he couldn't comply and the Catholic university decided to go in another direction with Gleason.

Ponsetto recalls the situation differently. She said DePaul went with Gleason because he is a better fit for the school. During the last five years, Bernstein and Gleason split the broadcasts. According to sources, DePaul wanted to go with one person doing the games.

I wasnt around for this and I dont know, but this always felt like an exaggeration if not outright lie by Bernstein

you don't think Danno making jokes about priests offended DePaul?

I think Dan may have taken a small suggestion about not calling the people signing his paychecks rapists and blown it up into the reason he wasnt brought back and tried to make himself a hero in the process

yeah...I really doubt you understand how big a thing that would be to a Catholic institution. That combined with Dan's general attitude about religion in general certainly could have sealed the deal. I have no reason to doubt Dan and it didn't really make him a hero.

Yeah, you would be way off in that and pretty condescending to a person who spent their whole life around the catholic church and catholic schools.

Its made him a hero to his fans. That's why its still brought up today and why you are arguing this with me for a second time.

Ok, we have you down as believing every word of what Bernstein said about that situation. Thats fine, you're not alone. I just think there is some exaggerating going on.

They only asked him to not joke about it. He could talk about it seriously, as they now do with so many stories, but the show was completely different back then.

Anyway, Dan wants or at least wanted to be a color man for a basketball team and he pretty much killed that career path. It hasn't hurt him financially but it was definitely not a smart move.

I don't hear the Northwestern or Boston U announcers talking about the point shaving scandals. I don't think the Louisville announcers talk about Pitino nailing menopausals in restaurant bathrooms.

Can we agree that the line "They want to protect their bretheren" was completely made up?

No one would say that. Thats how it would go down in a bad after school special about this stuff. Once the scandal actually broke, no one would phrase it that way.

General attitude about religion? There is nothing "general" about his derision. He is very targeted, very specific in who gets his abuse.

Yes. Bernstein is inherently anti-Christian.

Dan is about as anti-catholic/christian as any major sports radio guy I know.

This quote is also pretty telling:

"I can't be making secret deals that protect people from satire."

That's like 10x better than the old "I'm sorry if anyone was offended by my statements" non-apology apology.

I'm sure the jokes would have stopped if DePaul had sponsored the fax line.

"protect their brethren"? You don't think that's something a Catholic would say? Here's the facts:

Dan went Penn State heavy on the priest abuse scandal
Dan found himself without a job at DePaul

I just think Dan's story is true. I think he may have played up things a trifle but no more than what is normal for their show. I think he got let go because he wouldn't let up on the priests.

I never said that.

But Bernstein's comments were not unique. The church was being ripped by many at that point. He wasnt breaking news or jokes.

Maybe it did or maybe they liked Gleason better. Maybe Bernstein was bad and the jokes were an easy way to get rid of him.

If you believe it went down as Bernstein described (including the laughable brethren comment) than I think you need to reassess your vetting process.

I saw the 60 Minutes piece on Jeremy Lin last night. It turns out he is an evangelical who actively testified in China this summer. I'm interested to see how they will handle a Harvard grad, double engineer parent, player who is open about his theology?

During that scandal? When the most dastardly comment about the whole thing being that they "protected their own"

No, I dont think a catholic institution would say that.

That would be like O.J. saying "No, of course I didnt stab that cheating whore of a wife I used to have"

So you agree with me, just a matter of degree.

Cool.

I figure since he doesn't shove his piety in everyone's face like Timmy Tebow, Dan will just reiterate that Lin is bad at basketball if he mentions him at all.

"breaking news or jokes". No, he was using every ounce of his vitriol to not just rip the priests, but rip the institution, rip christianity in general, etc. As a "sports" guy. Easy for me to see why DePaul wouldn't want him around. The jokes line was probably just a setup to get rid of him knowing he wouldn't stop doing it.

Dan's already made it quite clear that he hated Linsanity (rightfully so) and doesn't like Lin (not rightfully so).

In ten years, the story will be that DePaul bosses were attempting to rape a kid and Dan physically stopped them.

So you think Bernstein wanted to effectively shut the door on his basketball play-by-play career just so he could make diddler jokes?

Sounds like he was trying to make lemonade out of lemons. DePaul wanted to go with one full-time guy and picked the other guy who is just as capable and respectful of his employer.

When the little kid Angus Jones on 'Two and a Half Men' spouted off on YouTube to not watch his show and CBS b/c it's all shit Dan & Terry ripped him for being an idiot.

I see very little difference in this situation.

have you heard Dan on the air? This is the guy who said you can't win a championship with Avery Johnson. You can't win a world series with Jose Uribe. Dan sticks to his guns, even when it's beyond stupid and even career impacting. If this show goes in the ratings can, don't expect Dan to change to try and move the needle more.

Both. If the suits told him to stop talking Penn State, CTE or Steve Alford, Dan would probably spontaneously combust.
