According to Bernstein, DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto asked him to refrain from making jokes on the issue and gave him a list of references he should avoid. Bernstein told DePaul he couldn't comply and the Catholic university decided to go in another direction with Gleason.

Ponsetto recalls the situation differently. She said DePaul went with Gleason because he is a better fit for the school. During the last five years, Bernstein and Gleason split the broadcasts. According to sources, DePaul wanted to go with one person doing the games.



I wasnt around for this and I dont know, but this always felt like an exaggeration if not outright lie by Bernstein

I think Dan may have taken a small suggestion about not calling the people signing his paychecks rapists and blown it up into the reason he wasnt brought back and tried to make himself a hero in the process

I just think Dan's story is true. I think he may have played up things a trifle but no more than what is normal for their show. I think he got let go because he wouldn't let up on the priests.

Dan sticks to his guns, even when it's beyond stupid and even career impacting.

he's always voiced the credo of bowing to the suits (can't say things on the air, might not get it past legal) (can't answer certain questions here on the board, might not get it past the suits). Just can't understand why Jerry has influence over him.
