Well, adults cheer for star athletes as well.

There's no war on the poor, please. Frankly, the war on poverty has ended up creating more of it in the name of dependence. I am not sure what you expect the Ricketts to do. If they were so influential, then how come the city didn't give them the public tax money they wanted in their original plan?

It's a damn free society, and if a guy has money and wants to spend it buying influence, then he can. It's the way our democracy works. I'd love to have a lot less government so you don't need to pay the piper to get a project approved in the city.

A sweeping generalization perhaps?

If you asked Tom Ricketts today: "Do you think Boilemaker Rick makes too much money?" I would guess his answer would be no.

If you asked a poor person would they say the same?

It may not be democracy, but it is how our system works. And I would contend every other system works the exact same way as to wealthy people using their money to buy influence.

In any case, I had my say here. I realize engaging JORR is a battle I can only lose. :)

So funny you said that as I almost added his name into my post!!! But then I felt it wouldn't be fair to take a "shot" at BR when he was not engaged in my discussion. Now he is!!! Too funny.

I actually like BR's point above.

Nah, I am not their champion. As you guys have said, they do well fighting their own battles. I am glad they are successful and glad they create wealth and jobs for the rest of us. It does not shock me that they look out for their own interests as we all do the same. It's simply that they have more fire power.

I am ok with a modest social safety net. Take a gander at the disability article on the front of the WSJ today. Pretty clear we are well past the "modest" piece.

Answer the question then and we'll see where the rabbit hole leads.

This is closer to what I believe.

Your previous posts read like a Sarah McGlauchlin ad for abused billionaires.

I make more than a poor person and less than a rich person.

I think Ricketts would say NO

I think poor people would be split about 65/35 in favor of NO

I think you need to switch that 65/35 split.

Even if it's more like 50/50, that's a pretty strong reason for middle class people to more closely align with the rich over the poor. Now, maybe my perception is off, but given how well "pay your fair share" sells in just about every election, I can't help but think they aren't just talking about Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

BRick with an illogical blast! Just because they answer that question that way doesn't mean they aren't doing everything they can to prevent it from happening.

Let me ask you a question. Do you think American law favors the rich or the poor or is it neutral?

I think you are overstating it a bit here. I do alright. You seem to do alright. Most of the people on this board seem to do alright.

There is a natural power in having money. Of course the laws favor the rich.

I want to know why that's different than a rich guy buying a stadium being fully aware of the existing conditions and then complaining and whining about said conditions.
I'm sure Ricketts also used every limitation with regard to Wrigley to his advantage during negotiations to justify a relatively lowball price.

We don't want to talk about that. Things have to go the rich guy's way 100% of the time.

I only shot down everything that you've stated while making your illogical comparison, but keep trying!

You shot down nothing. It's a perfectly logical comparison. You're just someone who likes to cheer the rich guy. I'm not sure why. I don't know you. Maybe you're rich yourself. More likely, you're a middle class guy who thinks he can one day be rich if he just works hard enough and catches a few breaks and has unfettered admiration for those he strives to be like. Go, rich guys, go! The Cubs are getting everything they want! Hallelujah! Let's party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of rich, that's exactly what your response is!

There are Grand Canyon sized leaps in this thread.

JORR, I don't know you either. Were you bullied by a Ricketts as a kid? Did the Cubs kidnap a family member? Why do you hate them so much? Besides, the "poor" people you're championing mostly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for a one bedroom condo, near a really loud ballpark. Some paid a million for a house...near a really loud ballpark. Anyone living there before 1914 is totally exempt and has every right to bitch about the noise.

Following your logic, O'Hare should be shut down because those poor (by comparison) people think it creates too much noise? O'Hare wants to expand? Fuck those rich bastards! They need to contract!!! Stop oppressing the poor and silence the airport!!

Perfectly normal.

And if you're going quote me in an accusing manner, at least get my damn words right.
